S4C 5-speed limited-slip (LSD) gearbox
into Civic EG (from Civic Type R)
Yes: the S4C 5-speed limited-slip (LSD) gearbox from the Civic Type R (1997-2000) fits the Civic EG (1992-1995) — moderate difficulty, modifications required.
Installation notes
Required modifications
The S4C is a B-series hydraulic-clutch gearbox and physically bolts to the same B-series bellhousing pattern used by B16A/B16A2/B18A/B18B/B18C engines, so the recipient Civic must already have (or be getting) a B-series engine - this swap does not add an LSD to a D-series-powered car on its own. Use 90-and-up Integra axles (94-97 Del Sol VTEC or 99-00 Civic Si axles are also cited as compatible, with the left-side intermediate shaft seal possibly needing to be changed depending on the axle/transmission pairing), and a 94-and-up Integra shift linkage (94-97 Del Sol VTEC linkage for Del Sols). Mounts can be a combination of stock Civic and Integra B-series mounts; on 96+ swaps some brackets near the timing belt and at the rear of the engine may need to be the year-correct part. If the donor car currently has a cable-clutch D-series setup, the full B-series hydraulic clutch system (pedal assembly, master/slave cylinder, lines) must be added as well, since the S4C is hydraulic-clutch only.
Important caveats
- The S4C only interchanges with other B-series hydraulic-clutch transmissions and bolts to a B-series engine/bellhousing - it cannot be bolted behind a D-series engine without also swapping the engine.
- Do not assume every transmission stamped or sold under an S4C-adjacent code has a limited-slip differential: some B-series transmission code charts place the S4C designation on more than one application, and the only reliable way to confirm LSD is to physically inspect the differential (an LSD shows a closed cylinder of gears/clutch packs; an open diff shows a simple spider-gear cross) rather than trust the case stamp or a seller's listing alone.
- Axle, shift-linkage and mount parts differ by donor year - confirm the exact axle and linkage combination for your specific EG or EK chassis before buying, since sources note year-dependent differences (e.g. intermediate shaft seal changes).
- Genuine JDM EK9 S4C units are import-only and command a premium; budget for sourcing a used transmission from a JDM importer rather than a domestic parts store.
- If swapping into a D-series car, treat this as part of a full B-series engine/transmission swap (hydraulic clutch pedal box, master/slave cylinder and lines included), not a standalone transmission-only job.
