Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Isolate the rotating assembly from the valvetrain
Before assuming the worst, separate the crankshaft from everything driven off it. Remove all spark plugs so no compression fights you, then take the timing belt off so the camshafts turn independently of the crank. Fit the pulley socket to the crank and try to rotate it in both directions with a long breaker bar. If the cams spin freely by hand but the crank will not move at all, the problem is in the bottom end rather than the valvetrain, and forcing it will only cause damage. On this engine the cams turned normally while the crankshaft stayed locked even with the plugs and belt removed.
2 Confirm the valves are not contacting the pistons
With the timing components off it is still worth verifying that no open valve is meeting a piston crown. Set the camshafts to TDC and pin them, then confirm the valves are closed on the cylinder you are testing. Even a pair of barely open valves on one port should not lock the assembly, and the crank should still turn backwards regardless. If the engine remains immovable with the valvetrain confirmed clear, the cause lies lower down.
3 Rule out the transmission
If the gearbox is still bolted to the engine, a transmission left in gear can feel exactly like a seized motor. A healthy engine can normally still be turned with a breaker bar even with the trans in gear, so a crank that will not budge at all points to internal seizure rather than the gearbox. To remove all doubt, separate the transmission from the engine and check it on its own: it should shift through every gear including reverse and spin freely. In this case the trans checked out perfectly and the engine was still locked, confirming the fault was inside the motor.
4 Soak the cylinders with penetrating oil
Rings can rust and stick to the bores on an engine that has sat, so try to free them chemically before taking anything apart. With the plugs out, pour penetrating oil down each plug hole so it pools on top of the pistons; automatic transmission fluid, PB Blaster, or Marvel Mystery Oil are all commonly used, and PB Blaster is safe here. Let it soak for several hours, topping it up, then try the breaker bar again. Be aware this does not always work: here the bores were soaked with ATF and then most of a can of penetrant over a full day and the crank still would not move, which itself is a strong sign of a genuine seizure rather than lightly stuck rings.
5 Drop the oil pan and inspect the bottom end
If soaking fails, remove the oil pan and look directly at the crankshaft, connecting rods and bearing journals. You are checking whether the assembly is merely stuck or truly seized. Healthy journals are clean and oily; dry, rusty rod journals mean the engine was stored without oil and has almost certainly seized. On this motor the rods and journals were found heavily rusted, which no properly assembled and oiled engine should ever show. Blow the loose rust out with compressed air so you can judge how much is surface staining versus deep pitting, but treat thick rust on the journals as a condemning sign.
6 Pull the cylinder head and read the top end
With the bottom end condemned, remove the cylinder head to inspect the bores and to audit how well the engine was actually assembled. Look down each bore for scoring and check the piston crowns; light carbon on a used head is normal, but scored walls are not. Critically, verify the assembly quality: each rod cap is stamped with its cylinder number so it goes back on the matching rod in the correct orientation, and every cam cap bolt and stud must be present. This engine revealed a rod cap for cylinder 3 that did not match, a missing cam cap bolt, a missing cam cap stud, and a broken-off valve cover mounting stud, all pointing to a careless build that warrants re-checking everything.
7 Verify fastener and clearance specifications
Before planning any reassembly, confirm the specifications you will rely on. Contrary to a common assumption, the head bolts on this engine are not torque-to-yield, so they can be reused rather than replaced (a point that was debated in the thread and confirmed by more experienced members). Torque-to-yield simply means a bolt is deliberately taken past its elastic limit, which is why such bolts cannot be reused; these are not. Because the build quality was suspect, plan to measure the rod and main bearing clearances with Plastigage and re-check all fastener torques rather than trusting the previous assembler.
8 Make the rebuild-or-replace decision
A short block that is seized and contaminated with rust cannot be trusted even if you eventually free it, because hidden bore, journal and bearing damage can strand you or fail catastrophically. If the inspection confirms deep rust and stuck rings, commit to a full teardown: press out the pistons and crank, have the connecting rods hot-tanked, inspected and (if pitted) replaced, rehone the bores, and fit new rings and bearings. While it is apart, replace the seals and gaskets that are far easier to do now than later, including the rear main seal, the front timing-side main seal, the valve stem seals, the cam seals and the valve cover gasket. If the crank and bearings measure good, a rehone with new rings may be enough; if not, source a sound replacement block.
