Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Flash the Nexus 7 with Timur's kernel
Unlock and root the Nexus 7 2013, then flash Timur's paid kernel. It adds the automotive behavior this build depends on: the tablet drops into deep sleep when 12V power is removed and wakes automatically when charging resumes, including booting itself from a fully powered-off state as soon as charge is applied. It also enables the multi-device USB host and USB-DAC support the audio chain needs. Verify it on the bench first by cutting USB power, letting the tablet fall asleep, then reconnecting power and confirming it wakes. Complete this before any mounting.
2 Build the tablet's in-car interface
Turn the stock Android home screen into a dashboard-style UI. Install Nova Launcher and set a custom row/column grid, lock a background image in place with a wallpaper-pinning app, then use Desktop Visualizer to lay invisible shortcut widgets over the artwork so each on-screen icon launches a specific app. Load the media and navigation apps you will actually use, for example PowerAmp for audio playback and Waze or Google Maps for directions.
3 Assemble the USB signal chain on the bench
Begin at the tablet's micro-USB port with the Motorola SKN6258 right-angle adapter, which keeps the cable exit tight against the dash. Plug the USB OTG cable into that adapter so the tablet can charge while still hosting USB devices. Connect a powered 4-port (or larger) USB hub to the OTG cable, then hang the accessories off the hub: the USB DAC (such as the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro II) and the JoyCon EXR interface, plus any USB extension you want to route to a reachable spot in the cabin.
4 Create the analog audio output
Feed the DAC's 3.5mm output into a Hosa YRA-154 3.5mm-to-dual-RCA cable, then run each of those RCA legs into a Hosa YRA-104 RCA-to-dual-RCA splitter. This leaves you with four RCA outputs, a front pair and a rear pair, ready to plug into the RCA inputs on the aftermarket stereo harness.
5 Integrate with the factory amplifier harness
Because the premium system keeps its factory amp, the tablet only has to deliver line-level audio and a switched turn-on signal. Land the four RCA outputs into an aftermarket stereo harness built for factory-amp retention. For the amp trigger, locate pin B16, the light blue "LT BLU" wire, on factory Audio Unit Connector B (the 20-pin plug), and tap the harness remote lead to it so the amplifier switches on with the ignition. A pre-made Scosche HA13B interface can take the place of hand-tapping: it needs only a small repin of the 20-pin connector and avoids cutting into OEM wiring.
6 Wire and program the steering wheel controls
The factory wheel switches are resistive, so the JoyCon EXR translates them into USB HID keystrokes the tablet can act on. Connect its supplied leads to the same 20-pin Audio Unit Connector B: pin B6, the brown "AUDIO REMOTE GND", and pin B7, the pink "AUDIO REMOTE SW". Plug the JoyCon into a Windows laptop, run its configuration software with those wires attached, and map each button, Mode, Volume Up/Down, and Channel Up/Down, to short and long-press actions. A workable scheme is volume on the volume rockers, track skip on the channel buttons, play/pause on a Mode tap, track scrub on a long channel press, and tablet sleep/wake on a long Mode press.
7 Supply switched 12V power
Power the tablet from a circuit that is live only with the ignition. Fit an add-a-fuse carrying a 20A fuse into a spare slot in the interior fuse box, run that to a 12V accessory socket, and plug the PowerGen 4.2A/20W dual-USB charger into it. From the charger, a long USB cable feeds the charging input on the OTG cable, which both charges the tablet and triggers its wake-from-sleep behavior.
8 Ground the system and eliminate noise
Bond the charger and DAC ground to bare chassis metal. Builders who left this out reported a whine and pop at startup plus ongoing hiss when the audio was quiet. Add an inline ground loop isolator on the audio path to kill the turn-on feedback; it removes the noise with no meaningful loss of sound quality.
9 Mount the tablet and assemble in the car
Seat the Nexus 7 in your Double DIN or OEM navigation bezel. The OEM navi opening is narrower than the tablet, so trim the bezel's locating pegs to let it sit flush and slightly recessed; recessing also reduces screen glare from the dash angle. Route the assembled bundle (tablet, OTG cable, hub, DAC, JoyCon, and RCA splitters) into the dash, connect the RCA plugs to the harness you already wired in, and join the charging cable to the OTG input.
10 Final power-cycle test
Turn the ignition off and confirm the tablet enters deep sleep and the hub-powered accessories shut down with it; turn it on and confirm everything wakes and that audio and the wheel controls respond. If the tablet occasionally reads a phantom charge at shutdown and stays awake, reboot it to reset the state.
