ZC DOHC engine
into Civic EF (from Civic Si (JDM))
Yes: the ZC DOHC engine from the Civic Si (JDM) (1988-1991) fits the Civic EF (1988-1991) — moderate difficulty, modifications required.
Installation notes
Required modifications
Engine mounts: Hasport says its EFSTK replacement kit for 88-91 Civic/CRX D-series engines also works with 88-91 JDM SOHC and DOHC ZC engines. Wiring/ECU: the JDM ZC uses its own engine harness and ECU; these must be adapted to the non-JDM chassis harness. The ZC is a D-series derivative, so the D-series cable transmission can be retained. Also check exhaust manifold-to-downpipe fitment and emissions requirements where you live.
Important caveats
- Several ZC generations exist; Wikipedia identifies the third-generation DOHC ZC (internal coil, PM7 inlet manifold) as the EF3/EF7 version.
- Only two sources were found for this swap and one is an encyclopedia entry on factory fitment rather than a swap guide.
- JDM engine wiring and ECU must be adapted to non-JDM chassis wiring.
- Imported JDM engines usually have unknown mileage and service history.
