Installation notes

Yes — the K20A2 engine and 6-speed transmission from a 2002-2004 RSX Type-S (DC5) fits a 1988-1991 Civic (EF) with an EF K-series mount kit, K-swap radius rods, swap axles and a cable-to-hydraulic clutch conversion. Innovative states that modification to the rear subframe and hood is necessary and that its kit does not fit K24 transmissions. Hasport sells EFK2, EFK4 and EFK5 versions for different K-series transmissions. The same parts are listed for the 1988-1991 CRX.

Required modifications

Engine mounts: Hasport EFK2 (RSX and 02-11 Civic Si manual transmissions; Hasport says the EFK kits require cutting and welding, and a K20 fits under the stock hood on the lower mount setting) or Innovative 99150 (02-05 Civic Si, 02-06 RSX or Integra Type R manual transmissions; its self-locating bracket must be welded to the frame and the rear subframe and hood need modification). Radius rods: Hasport EFKROD clears the wider K-series block while keeping the factory front crossmember. Clutch: the EF has a cable clutch and the K-series gearbox is hydraulic, so a cable-to-hydraulic conversion or hydraulic pedal setup is needed. Axles: K-swap axles for 88-91 Civic/CRX with the RSX/EP3 intermediate shaft (Hasport HP-EFKAX). Plus wiring/ECU, shifter cables, cooling, fuel and exhaust.

Caution

Important caveats

  • Both kits involve welding: Hasport says its EFK kits require cutting and welding, and Innovative says its EF K kit requires welding a bracket to the frame plus rear subframe and hood modifications.
  • A K24 block needs Honda post-mount bracket 11910-PPA-000 with the Innovative kit, and the kit does not fit K24 transmissions.
  • The EF chassis has a cable clutch, so the hydraulic K-series transmission needs a clutch conversion.
  • Hasport lists its EF K-swap axle set for the RSX/EP3 manual intermediate shaft.
