1 Warm the engine and lay out your tools

Run the car until it reaches normal operating temperature - the point where the radiator fan cycles on. The factory procedure specifies a warm engine, and the numbers you record are only meaningful measured that way. A few contributors prefer testing cold to avoid loosening plugs from a hot aluminum head, which can gall the threads; if you go that route, expect slightly lower readings and judge the result on consistency between cylinders rather than absolute pressure. Set every tool out in the order you will use it so tracking which part belongs to which cylinder stays effortless.

2 Disable the fuel supply

Pull the fuel pump fuse before cranking so raw fuel is not sprayed into the open cylinders during the test. On these coil-on-plug K-series motors the ignition is interrupted the moment the coils are unplugged, so cutting fuel is the only extra step needed to keep the engine from trying to fire. Owners of the '05-and-later Type-S (K20Z1) should note that the ECU recognizes a compression test and disables the injectors on its own; after you finish, pull the ECU fuse or briefly disconnect the battery to clear that state.

3 Remove the plug cover and clear the area

Take off the plastic cover over the plugs with a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and a 10 mm socket. If an aftermarket strut brace crosses the valve cover, unbolt it or swing it aside for clear access from above. Free the throttle cable from its small retaining bracket near the intake so nothing is under tension while you work, and set the cover and its fasteners somewhere you will remember.

4 Remove the ignition coils

Undo the 10 mm bolt securing each of the four coil packs and lift the coils out. Release each connector by squeezing its lock tab and pulling it straight off the coil rather than at an angle. Arrange the coils and their bolts in cylinder sequence, one through four, so every piece returns to exactly where it came from.

5 Clean the wells, then remove and read the plugs

Blow compressed air into each plug recess first, so grit sitting in the well cannot drop into the cylinder once the plug is out. Assemble the 3/8-inch ratchet with both extensions and the 5/8-inch rubber-lined plug socket, then back each plug out one at a time, keeping them in order. Read them as you pull them: a light tan or mocha color is healthy, a chalky white tip points to a lean condition, metallic flecks signal detonation lifting aluminum off the pistons, and a very dark plug suggests a rich mixture. A plug wet with oil in one hole often traces to a failed spark plug tube seal.

6 Test each cylinder in turn

Thread the gauge hose into the number-one plug hole by hand until it seats. Hold the throttle wide open so the plate does not choke off airflow, then crank the starter and let it spin continuously - not on-and-off - until the needle stops climbing. This usually takes several revolutions; three is rarely enough. Record the reading, press the gauge's bleed button to release the pressure, and repeat for cylinders two, three and four. Expect to smell fuel vapor by the last cylinder, and do not be alarmed by loud popping from the exhaust as trapped air escapes.

7 Interpret the readings

Compare the four figures against each other first, since uniformity matters more than any single number. For the K20A3, treat 135 psi as the floor and keep cylinder-to-cylinder variation under 28 psi. The K20A2 Type-S factory data is taken at 250 rpm at wide-open throttle, with a 930 kPa minimum and no more than 200 kPa of variation. Healthy Type-S motors commonly read roughly 175 to 205 psi. A cylinder that has fallen more than about 25 percent below a fresh engine points toward a rebuild. When a reading is low, the usual causes are worn valves or valve seats, a failed head gasket, tired piston rings, or a scored piston and bore.

8 Reassemble and torque

Refit the plugs with a light smear of anti-seize on the threads - a small dab is plenty, since threading them in spreads it evenly. Torque each plug to its specified value instead of guessing by feel, which protects the aluminum head. Reconnect the coils in their original cylinder order and bolt them down, reattach the throttle cable and strut brace, and refit the plug cover. Reinstall the fuel pump fuse - and on a K20Z1, reset the ECU as noted - before starting the engine.
