Honda Civic FN2 Headliner (Roof Lining) Removal and Refit

1-2 hours 5 views WAR Machine via Civinfo (adapted)

Introduction

This guide covers dropping and removing the one-piece headliner from a Honda Civic FN2 (the European eighth-generation three-door hatch, including Type R and Type S trims), then refitting it. Pulling the roof lining is the usual first step before applying roof sound deadening, chasing a rattle, retrimming the panel, or accessing wiring and the dome light circuit above the cabin. Because the panel is anchored by the grab handles, sun visors, interior lights, rear seatbelt top mounts and hidden clips near the tailgate, the job is really a sequence of small releases done in the right order so nothing is forced or cracked. Work slowly around plastic clips, as they are easily broken. To reinstall, run the sequence in reverse and reconnect every plug before the panel is clipped back up. Tools Required

  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Medium flat-blade screwdriver
  • Medium Phillips screwdriver
  • Torx bit or socket, T20 or T25 (verify against your visor bolts)
  • 10mm socket and ratchet (interior light panels)
  • 14mm socket and ratchet (seatbelt anchor bolts)

Parts Required

  • None (removal and refit only; reuse all original clips and fasteners)

Safety Warnings

  • The rear seatbelt top mount is a safety-critical anchor. Reinstall its bolt, spacer and washer exactly as removed and tighten securely; do not drive with the belt anchor loose.
  • Disconnect the green sun-visor connector before pulling the visor fully away, or the vanity-light wiring can be torn.
  • The roof lining clips are brittle plastic; releasing them with steady, controlled force avoids cracking the panel or the roof mounts.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1 Free the rear side trim and top seatbelt anchor

Open the tailgate and peel back the rubber boot seal along the rear opening on the side you are starting from. Behind the black trim panel that retains the rear parcel area, locate the upper rear seatbelt anchor, remove its plastic bolt cover, and undo the anchor bolt with a 14mm socket. With the belt freed at the top, release the side trim panel from its clips and set it aside. Note the orientation of the seatbelt spacer and washer so the anchor torque and stacking are restored correctly on refit.

2 Release the grab handle covers

Move to a roof grab handle and swing it down to the open position. On the exposed mounting face you will find two small slots. Insert a small flat screwdriver into each slot in turn to trip the internal spring clips that hold the handle trim. Work gently so the tabs release rather than snap.

3 Remove each grab handle from its socket

With the covers released, two sprung metal retaining clips are visible inside the mount. Pinch the two clip ends toward each other to clear the retaining lugs, then draw the handle straight out of its recess. Immediately push those metal clips back into the handle body so they are not dropped inside the roof or lost. Repeat for all four handles.

4 Detach the sun visors

Swing each visor down and clear of its outer clip. Rotate or twist off the small cap that hides the inboard mounting screws to expose the bolts, then undo them (a T20 Torx suits most cars; confirm T20 versus T25 before applying force). Ease the visor away and unplug the green vanity-light connector before it is stretched. At the outer pivot clip, slip a screwdriver behind it to press the retaining pin inward, twist the clip clockwise, and pull it free.

5 Remove the interior and dome lights

Unclip the lens from each interior light unit to reach the fasteners beneath. Undo the retaining screws, using a 10mm socket where the light panels are bolted, and lower each unit. Disconnect its wiring plug and lift the light away. Both the front dome light and any rear reading lights must come out so the panel is fully unpinned.

6 Drop the front edge and free the wiring

With all four handles and both light units removed, tilt the forward edge of the roof lining downward away from the windscreen header. Trace and unclip the wiring loom running across the panel, releasing it from its retainers so the harness stays with the car and does not hang on the lining as it comes down.

7 Release the hidden rear clips

Two concealed clips near the tailgate hold the back of the panel. Support the lining and draw it forward toward the windscreen to pop these rear clips loose. Move in small increments and feel for each clip letting go rather than pulling hard across the whole panel at once.

8 Extract the headliner through the tailgate

Once every fastener, plug and clip is released, angle the panel and slide it rearward, out through the open tailgate and boot aperture. Guide it clear of the pillars and door apertures to avoid creasing or scuffing the fabric. To refit, reverse the whole sequence, seat the rear clips first, reconnect the light and visor plugs, and torque the seatbelt anchors back down before final trimming is clipped home.

Pro Tips

  • 💡 Removal and refit each take roughly an hour when working methodically; dealer time estimates of a day are scheduling padding, not the actual labour.
  • 💡 Roof sound deadening is only worth the effort for a serious audio install or full deadening project; for general use the roof panel contributes little.
  • 💡 Keep the freed grab-handle metal clips seated in each handle so they are ready for refit and cannot fall inside the roof.
  • 💡 Label or bag the visor, handle and light fasteners by location, since bolt lengths and covers differ around the roof.
