Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi Diesel EGR Valve Removal and Cleaning
Introduction
A clogged exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is one of the most common causes of poor low-rev performance on the 2.2-litre i-CTDi diesel Honda Civic (FK generation) and the related 2.2 diesel CR-V. Recirculated exhaust gas gradually lays down a tar-like sludge across the valve and the intake manifold ports, choking airflow. Owners typically notice hesitation or rough running in the higher gears at around 1500 rpm long before any fault code appears, and blockages of 60 to 90 percent are routinely found between roughly 65,000 and 110,000 miles. Removing, cleaning, and resealing the valve restores throttle response and often improves fuel economy for little more than the price of a gasket kit. - ⚠ Do not overtighten the manifold fasteners. They are low-torque, and a sheared stud or cracked manifold is a major repair.

Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Obtain the correct gaskets and cleaning supplies
Order a new set of EGR gaskets before touching the engine. These are metal compression rings that must be renewed rather than reused; the sealing lips will not reseat reliably second time around. For the diesel, ask a Honda dealer for the EGR valve seal kit, part number 18715RSRE01KIT (the individual seals are H18715RSRE01 and H18722RBDE01), which costs around £12 including VAT. Also have degreaser, white spirit, or brake cleaner, a stiff bottle brush, an empty spray bottle, and strong gloves ready before you start.
2 Warm the engine to ease the fasteners
Run the engine for a few minutes so it is warm before you begin. The temperature difference between the aluminium manifold and the steel bolts helps them break loose, and several owners found that a properly warm engine was the difference between the bolts moving and not. A hotter engine loosens them further still, but take care not to burn your hands and forearms in the confined space around the valve.
3 Remove the plastic engine cover
Lift off the plastic cover that sits over the top of the engine. It is retained by four nuts that take a 10 mm socket. Set the cover and its nuts aside where they will not be lost.
4 Free the dipstick and disconnect the vacuum hose
Undo the dipstick mounting bolt; access is tight here, so a 10 mm spanner is easier to swing than a ratchet. Swing the dipstick clear of the valve, or remove it altogether, to open up your reach. Detach the small rubber vacuum hose at its engine-side connection rather than at the valve, because the spigot on the valve end is fragile and easily damaged.
5 Release the two awkward bolts first
Two of the valve fasteners sit hard against the cooling fan and radiator and are the most difficult to reach; on the original writeup these are marked with a white arrow. Break these two free first with a 12 mm socket, working carefully to protect your knuckles, while the valve is still fully supported by its other fixings.
6 Remove the remaining fasteners and withdraw the valve
Undo the remaining two bolts and two nuts, all 12 mm, and lift the EGR valve away from the engine. Discard the old seals straight away so they cannot be refitted by mistake. Inspect the valve and its ports; a heavily coked valve is entirely normal on these engines and confirms the job is worthwhile.
7 Clean the EGR valve
Work degreaser, white spirit, or brake cleaner into the two valve ports that mate to the engine, and scrub out the hardened deposits with the bottle brush. The buildup nearest the exhaust side bakes hard because of the heat, so this part takes patience. Keep going until the passages are open and the sealing faces are clean and bright.
8 Clean the intake manifold
Spray solvent into the manifold ports and loosen the sludge with the brush. Stop debris from dropping deeper into the manifold, and never insert anything that could snap off or become lodged inside. Holding a vacuum at the opening helps draw out the loosened muck as you work. The manifold deposits are usually a soft gel rather than hard carbon, so they clear more readily than the valve itself.
9 Fit new gaskets and refit the valve
Seat the new compression gaskets on the manifold and pipe faces, then offer the valve back into place. Start the two awkward bolts you removed first, then the remaining manifold bolts and nuts, tightening them in sequence. If you torque them, they are low at 22 Nm; do not exceed this. An overtightened stud can strip or shear and crack the manifold, which is a far bigger repair.
10 Reconnect everything and clear any warning light
Refit the small vacuum hose, secure the dipstick, and replace the plastic cover. Leaving that hose off is the single most common mistake and will light the engine warning lamp. Start the engine and check for leaks. If the lamp is on, refit the hose, then drive until the engine is warm and the EGR is cycling so the ECU re-checks the valve and clears the light on its own.

- 💡 For much better access, remove the slam-panel crossbeam or the metal strut above the radiator (around 8 bolts) before starting.
- 💡 Photograph the hose routing on your phone before disconnecting anything, so refitting is straightforward.
- 💡 For stubborn bolts, gain leverage with a length of strong tube slipped over the ratchet handle or a ring spanner used as an extension, and secure the socket with a cable tie so it cannot fall.
