Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Choose a level spot and lift the car
Because the gearbox is filled to its spill point, the vehicle must sit level during the refill for the quantity to be correct. If your working surface slopes, plan to raise the car enough to bring it level and confirm with a small spirit level on the sill. Slacken the left-hand wheel nuts, raise that corner with the trolley jack, and lower the car securely onto an axle stand before removing the wheel.
2 Open up access at the wheel arch
Gently release the two plastic peg fasteners holding the dirt shield inside the wheel arch and fold the shield down. This exposes both gearbox plugs, so there's no need to pull off the engine's service cover or remove the whole under-tray. The drain plug sits just beneath the inner CV joint and the fill plug sits just behind it.
3 Break the fill plug loose first
Always crack the fill plug free before touching the drain plug. If the fill plug turns out to be seized, you discover it while the box is still full rather than after you have drained it and stranded the car. Use a 17 mm socket; the plug is tight and access is cramped, so an impact driver spares your knuckles. Loosen it, but leave it seated for now.
4 Set up spill control under the drain plug
The awkward part of this job is catching the fluid instead of wearing it. Position an absorbent sheet and the drain pan directly beneath the drain plug. If the under-car shield blocks a clean path for the oil, a small drilled hole through the plastic in line with the plug lets the fluid fall straight into the pan; take a moment to line everything up before the oil starts running.
5 Loosen and remove the drain plug
The drain plug takes a 3/8" square drive; fit that bit onto an extension bar for the best purchase, as using the bare end of an extension is a looser fit and risks rounding the plug. Break it free carefully, then back it out slowly and let the oil run. Adjust the pan as the stream changes direction, then remove the plug fully. Allow plenty of time for it to finish dripping, which can take around fifteen minutes.
6 Refit the drain plug with a new washer
Wipe the area around the drain hole clean, fit a fresh aluminium crush washer to the plug, thread it back in, and tighten to 39 Nm. Clean around the fill hole as well and prepare its plug with a new washer ready for the refill.
7 Refill until it spills, with the car level
Bring the car back to level if you raised it for draining, keeping it safely supported throughout. Feed the funnel's hose in through the wheel arch and into the fill hole; a hose slightly narrower than the opening works best, since a hose that fills the hole acts as a plug and hides the moment the box is full. Pour in the Honda MTF3 slowly, roughly 1.4 litres, and stop as soon as fluid begins to trickle back out of the fill hole.
8 Seal the fill plug and reassemble
Withdraw the hose and immediately fit the fill plug with its new washer, tightening to 44 Nm. Clean up any spilled fluid from the under-car shield, clip the two plastic peg fasteners back into the dirt shield, refit the wheel, lower the car off the stand, and torque the wheel nuts to 108 Nm.

- 💡 Undo the fill plug before you drain a single drop; a seized fill plug on an empty gearbox leaves the car undriveable.
- 💡 A purpose-made funnel with a slim hose is worth buying. A wide garden hose seals the fill hole and makes it hard to see when the box overflows.
