Honda Civic (10th Gen) LED Interior Light Upgrade with DIY Reflectors
Introduction
Swapping the factory interior bulbs of a 10th-generation Honda Civic for LEDs is a quick brightness upgrade, but LEDs throw a tighter, more directional beam than the incandescent bulbs they replace, so light output around the glove box, dome (roof) lamp, and trunk can look uneven. This guide covers the LED swap itself plus a set of cheap home-made reflectors that recover spread and make the cabin noticeably brighter, along with an optional trick to soften the vanity mirror lamps if the new LEDs are too harsh. The reflectors are made from ordinary aluminum foil, so total cost is minimal and the work needs no special tools. The methods were demonstrated on a 10th-gen Premier but transfer to other trims and are broadly applicable to similar fittings on other vehicles. Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Replace the glove box bulb
The glove box lamp sits in a recess too tight to reach with your fingers. Grip the bulb using fine needle-nose pliers, and press a small dab of adhesive putty onto the plier tips first so the bulb is held securely and does not ping loose while you ease it out. Fit the LED replacement the same way.
2 Make your reflector stock
Because the LEDs concentrate their output, a small reflector behind each lamp restores brightness and coverage. Build a reusable sheet from aluminum kitchen foil: press a few layers of masking tape (or waterproof tape) onto the dull face to stiffen it into a panel that keeps its shape when cut. Leave the bright face clean, since that side will point toward each bulb.
3 Add a reflector to the dome (roof) light
Cut a piece of the stiffened foil to suit the back of the roof lamp housing. Set it in place with the shiny face toward the LED, then anchor it at the front and rear edges with a couple of short strips of double-sided tape so it sits flat behind the bulb.
4 Remove and prepare the trunk (boot) light
Release the trunk lamp from its aperture, install the LED, and put a reference mark on the holder so it goes back the correct way round (LEDs that only emit in one direction must face the cabin). Unplug the wiring connector to take the whole unit out for bench work, then wrap any exposed contacts with electrical tape as a precaution against a short circuit.
5 Fit the trunk light reflector
Lay a strip of double-sided tape along both sides of the bulb holder. Cut a reflector blank of roughly "50 x 65 mm" from your foil stock, press it into place with the bright face toward the bulb, and trim it to the final shape once it is seated in position.
6 Soften the vanity mirror lamps (optional)
If the vanity mirror lights look too bright once the LEDs are in, stick a small offcut of window tint film to the inside of the lens. This knocks the output back to a more comfortable level without changing the bulb.
Pro Tips
- 💡 The map light housings do not accept a foil reflector well; a strip of polished self-adhesive aluminum tape, cut to fit, is a possible alternative there.
- 💡 Mark the trunk bulb orientation before final assembly, since a one-directional LED must face into the cabin to be useful.
- 💡 Waterproof tape works as well as masking tape for stiffening the foil and resists moisture in the trunk.
