Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Inventory what your car left the factory with
Before buying anything, confirm which bars and mounts your chassis already has, because base trims often shipped incomplete. The 1992-1995 Civic DX coupe came with neither a front nor a rear bar. Per a correction in the discussion, the 1992-1995 Civic VX carried a 19mm solid front bar, and no hatchback of that generation received a rear bar, not even the Si. Just as important, non-Si 1988-1991 CRX and Civic lack the rear frame body mounts a rear bar bolts to, while Si trims include them. Check both the front and rear, and confirm whether your rear lower control arms have the sway-bar eye (the DX arm does not; the Si arm does).
2 Select a donor bar by diameter
Pick the target diameters from the OEM reference values, remembering that a bigger front bar shifts balance toward understeer and a bigger rear bar toward oversteer. Representative factory sizes (front / rear): 1988-1991 Civic sedan 19mm solid / 15mm; 1988-1991 CRX Si 18mm solid / 15mm; 1992-1995 Civic EX 21mm; 1992-1995 Civic Si 21mm / 13mm; 1990-1993 Integra 23mm / 14.7-15.9mm; 1994-1999 Integra 22mm / 12.9-14mm; 1997-2001 Integra Type R 24mm / 22mm USDM (23mm JDM); 2002-2004 RSX 23mm / 19mm; Del Sol DOHC 24mm / 15mm. Note that a hollow bar is lighter for the same effective rate: a 23mm hollow front bar behaves like a 19mm solid one, so compare rate, not just the number stamped on the bar.
3 Match the control arms, end links, and bushings
A front upgrade is largely bolt-in: moving from an 18mm front to a 90-93 Integra 23mm needs only the bar itself with its own links and bushings. Control arms matter only at the rear. For a rear bar you need matching rear lower control arms (from any 88-95 Civic or 90-01 Integra), the correct end links, the frame brackets, and fresh bushings. Source the bar and its supporting hardware as a set rather than mixing parts from different chassis.
4 Plan the rear mount on cars that never had one
Non-Si 1988-1991 CRX and Civic have no rear body mounts, so you must add them. Two approaches work: fabricate or bolt in the mounts using the community method, or fit an OBX 92-00 19mm rear bar whose included tie-rod/subframe brace supplies the mounting and bolts into place cleanly. On the 88-01 Integra and on 88-00 Civic and CRX chassis, the rear control-arm subframe bolts sit the same distance apart; only the earliest 88-91 Civic/CRX runs that spacing roughly 1/32 inch tighter, which you open up with a light ream. Take up the height difference in the subframe face with washers, or step up to the OBX or ASR brace, which also pre-locates the holes for a later ASR upgrade.
5 Raise the car and free the control-arm bolts gently
Support the vehicle on jack stands before working underneath. The rear lower-control-arm bolt (hardware position #40) is notorious for seizing in rust-belt and road-salt regions and will snap under surprisingly little force. Soak it in penetrating oil, work it loose slowly, and do not muscle it. Keep six or more spare control-arm bolts on hand so a broken one does not end the job.
6 Install the rear bar with the correct brackets and end links
Bracket and end-link matching is where most rear swaps go wrong. Fitting a 94-01 Integra rear bar into a 96-2000 Civic requires Si subframe brackets and Si end links, because the Integra brackets are cut for a different subframe depth and the Integra end links miss the control-arm holes on the four-door Civic. If you also install 94-01 Integra rear lower control arms, you then only need the subframe brackets. Be aware the 96-00 subframe was changed from the earlier cars, so parts bolt up differently across that break. Torque the bar and end links evenly.
7 Fit or upgrade the front bar and check clearance
Many front swaps drop straight in, but verify clearance rather than assuming it. A 92-95 Civic or 94-01 Integra front bar laid over an 88-91 CRX/Civic shows a clearance conflict caused by the way the newer bar is bent, so trial-fit before committing. If you are building the GSR Type-R front setup, the front bar is 24mm in both USDM and JDM form, and the matching OEM strut brace is part number 74300-SR3-010.
8 Reset rear camber after a control-arm swap
The rear lower control arms of 88-95 Honda and 90-01 Acura differ in length by only about 1/16 inch, but even that small change alters camber. Correct it the same way you would any negative-camber condition: install a rear camber kit and dial it in, or use the washer-shim method. Once the arms and bar are in, get a proper alignment so the tires wear evenly.
9 Balance the front and rear bar rates
Tune the pair, not each bar in isolation, or you will introduce snap oversteer. As a road-course rule of thumb, a car that is loose entering a corner wants a stiffer front bar or a softer rear, while a car that pushes (tight) wants a softer front bar or a stiffer rear. Avoid leaning only on stiffer rear springs when a rear bar change is what is really needed, since that can cost forward bite and braking. As a starting balance, an 18mm front bar pairs well with a Si rear bar.
