Once the matching Type R/S arches are used, the splitters, skirts and triangles attach with the standard 5-door poppers, clips and 10mm bolts. The full set must be used together: mixing Type R splitters with standard arches leaves a visible gap. A persistent gap of roughly 1.5 inches over about 4 inches remains at the rear door/skirt junction and is closed with rubber strip, fibreglass or vinyl. Minor screw-hole misalignment is normal because the 5-door inner liner is rounded where the 3-door arch is more triangular. The rear splitter needs 3-door exhaust triangles and reflectors, and the tailpipe may vibrate against the new triangles.
The rear wheel arches require modified retaining clips: standard tree clips trimmed to a small square head, fitted in place of the fourth and fifth clips up from the bottom, because the Type R arch uses a different clip pattern than the 5-door. A straight 3-door kit does not sit flush on the wider 5-door shell; the arches must be cut-and-shut (heated, bent and trimmed) by a bodyshop, otherwise a gap opens along the top of the rear arches. Fitting the front splitter also requires removing the number-plate surround to reach a hidden screw that ties the splitter and bumper together.

Important Caveats

  • • A straight 3-door-to-5-door swap without cut-and-shut arches produces an unacceptable gap along the top of the rear arches.
  • • The tailpipe often rattles against the Type R exhaust triangles; cure with a Ford Escort hanger rubber (PSM54C), Powerflex EXH011 mounts, about 1cm trimmed from each tailpipe, or bent exhaust hangers.
  • • Some screw and clip holes will not line up perfectly; the final white clip at the front-arch-to-skirt junction frequently will not seat, though it stays out of sight.
