B17A1 engine and cable-clutch transmission
into Civic EF (from Integra GS-R)
Yes: the B17A1 engine and cable-clutch transmission from the Integra GS-R (1992-1993) fits the Civic EF (1988-1991) — moderate difficulty, modifications required.
Installation notes
Required modifications
Engine mounts: an EF B-series mount kit for the cable transmission (Hasport EFB1, or Innovative 19150/B19150). Innovative requires the 1990-1993 Integra timing-belt-side post mount (its part B59350) with its kit, and sells an EF B-series A/C bracket (59180) to keep the factory A/C. Clutch: no conversion, because both the EF and the DA Integra GS-R use a cable clutch. Wiring: EF B-swap adapter harness or a full engine harness. Axles and shift linkage must suit the B-series cable transmission.
Important caveats
- Innovative states its cable kit needs the 1990-1993 Integra timing-belt post mount; a different post mount will not bolt up.
- Innovative notes some LS/VTEC combinations and taller-deck B18C engines need minor trimming of the hood underside; the B17A1 uses the lower-deck B-series block.
- Wikipedia lists the North American 1992-1993 GS-R under VIN DB2 while Innovative refers to the DA9/DB2 chassis; check the VIN of the donor car.
- The 1990-1993 non-GS-R Integra B18A1 also used a cable transmission; this entry covers the GS-R B17A1.
