Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Check the lever for residual tension
With the parking brake fully released, feel the lever and cable. There should be no load on it at all when it is down. If the lever already feels taut or springy in the off position, the cable is likely holding the rear pads partly against the discs, which is enough to cause drag and the resulting rear brake dust.
2 Raise the rear and spin-test the wheels
Chock the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the car and support it on axle stands. With the parking brake fully off, spin each rear wheel by hand. A properly released brake lets the wheel rotate and coast on its own momentum for a moment after you let go. If a wheel stops almost immediately and you can hear the pads scraping the disc, the brake is binding and the cable adjustment is the first thing to check.
3 Locate the in-console adjuster nut
The cable tension is set by a single adjuster nut on the equaliser at the base of the lever assembly. It is reached through the opening in the centre console beside the lever. If you cannot get to it cleanly, the centre console is retained by four screws and can be lifted slightly to give better access with a spanner. A 10mm deep socket reaches the nut through the console hole without removing anything.
4 Slacken the cable tension
Fit the 10mm deep socket (or spanner) onto the adjuster nut and back it off in small increments to introduce a little slack into the cable. Work gradually rather than loosening it a long way at once, checking the lever feel between adjustments. The goal is for the lever to carry no tension when fully down, then begin to take up load and start applying the pads within the first click or two of travel.
5 Set the correct number of clicks
Adjust so the ratchet clicks fall within the factory range. The service manual specifies roughly 8 to 9 clicks at a pull of 196 Nm (about 20 kg) of lever effort; members reported that anywhere from about 5 to 7 clicks also gave a firm hold with free-spinning wheels. Too few clicks (for example only two or three) can fail an MOT for insufficient cable tension, so do not overshoot on slackness. Tighten or loosen the nut until the lever both frees the wheels when down and locks firmly when pulled up.
6 Recheck for drag and holding power
With the adjustment set, spin each rear wheel again with the brake off to confirm it now turns and coasts freely with no scraping. Then apply the lever fully and confirm the brake holds the wheels solidly. Lower the car and, if practical, test that it holds on an incline. If a wheel still drags with the cable slackened, the cable is not the cause and you should move on to inspecting the caliper sliders and pad wear.

- 💡 If the wheels still bind after the cable is slackened right off, suspect sticking caliper sliders or pads seized in the carrier; cleaning, filing and lubricating the sliders often cures drag that no amount of cable adjustment will.
