1 Select and prepare the sensors

Choose a four-sensor kit in a colour close to your paint: plain grey is a near match for Galaxy Grey and silver suits Alabaster Silver, both close enough that many installers leave them unpainted. If your colour is not offered, buy unpainted sensors and spray them using your car's paint code, found on the second row of the plate at the passenger-side door pillar. Apply only light coats, because a thick paint build-up reduces the sensors' sensitivity; some kits specify no primer and a single coat.

2 Bench-test the kit first

Before any drilling or trim removal, connect the four sensors, the control box and the buzzer together and apply power to confirm every sensor and the buzzer respond correctly. Verifying the hardware now avoids diagnosing a dead system after the bumper is back on, and lets you return a faulty sensor before you have committed to the install.

Prise off the body-coloured caps and undo the four retaining bolts beneath them. Along the lower edge there are four clips per side; leave the inner two of each set alone, as they hold the triangular exhaust trim. Ease each rear wheel-arch liner back only far enough to reach its retaining screw, pulling gently so the trim flexes rather than snapping. The wheel-arch clips are smaller than the rest, so keep them separate for reassembly. Push the bumper forward and outward to release the leading edge on each side from the side clips, which seat by pushing toward the centre of the car. Lay the bumper face-up on a blanket to protect the paint.

4 Mark and drill the sensor holes

The four sensor positions are pre-moulded into the inner face of the bumper. Centre-punch each mark, drill a small pilot hole from the inside, then cut the full hole from the painted side using the supplied hole saw. Push the saw completely through and release it from the chuck to retrieve it, rather than dragging it back through the fresh hole. Leave off masking tape: peeling it away afterwards can lift paint from around the cut.

5 Fit the sensors and route the cables

Press the four sensors into their holes from the outside. Gather the leads with cable ties and pass the loom through the factory cable entry point behind the bumper. Drilling out the plastic bung there opens a water path into the boot, so fit a rubber grommet sized for all four cables or seal the drilled bung with silicone. Add a cable tie either side of the grommet so the loom cannot be tugged loose or slip down behind the bumper.

6 Splice into the reverse-light feed

Run the supply lead up behind the rear quarter pillar to the harness connector, which sits behind the interior trim by the upper rear seatbelt anchorage. Join the red sensor wire to the brown reverse-light wire using a snap-lock connector, seating it firmly with pliers, and attach the black wire to an earth bolt behind the trim. The reverse-light wire is reported on the passenger side in some posts but corrected to the driver's side on UK cars, so check both sides. A battery disconnect is not needed provided the ignition is off and the car is out of reverse.

7 Mount the control box and buzzer

Lift the spare-wheel cover and locate the control box beneath the boot floor filler, trimming the polystyrene as needed to seat it. Position the buzzer centrally between the rear seatbelt mounts, or route it forward to sit in the driver's footwell behind the carpet if you prefer it quieter. Handle the buzzer's wires with care, as they are extremely fine and pull off the sealed unit easily.

8 Test and reassemble

With the wiring still accessible, turn the ignition on, select reverse and confirm all four sensors beep as an obstacle approaches. Once satisfied, refit the interior trim, offer the bumper up and engage the side and lower clips, refit the wheel-arch liners with their smaller clips, then reinstall the four bolts and caps. Reassembly is quick once the release method is understood.
