JDM K20A (Type R) engine
into Civic Si (from Civic Type R)
Yes: the JDM K20A (Type R) engine from the Civic Type R (2001-2005) fits the Civic Si (2002-2005) — moderate difficulty, modifications required.
Installation notes
Required modifications
Mounts: none — the JDM Civic Type R used the same EP3 body as the US Civic Si. ECU: Hondata KPro supports the 2002-2005 Civic Si (PNF) ECU and the 2003-2004 Japanese Civic Type R (PRD) ECU; Hondata's admin states an EP3 must use a manual (not automatic) ECU with KPro. Harness: use a 02-04 style engine harness (Hondata states engine swaps must use a 02-04 engine harness and transmission); the JDM K20A harness is RHD-length. Transmission: the US Si 5-speed can stay, or fit a 6-speed with matching ECU/harness for the reverse lockout.
Important caveats
- Hondata lists the Japanese Civic Type R ECU for 2003-2004, while Wikipedia lists JDM Civic Type R K20A production as 2001-2006; check the donor's exact year and ECU code.
- Hondata's forum admin says an EP3 should not use an automatic ECU with KPro.
- JDM K20A harnesses are RHD-length and lack the oil pressure switch connector, per Hybrid Racing.
- The EDM Civic Type R uses a different K20A2 (200 hp) rather than the JDM K20A; confirm which engine you are buying.
