H22A engine and manual transmission (H-swap)
into Civic CRX (from Prelude VTEC)
Yes: the H22A engine and manual transmission (H-swap) from the Prelude VTEC (1993-1996) fits the Civic CRX (1988-1991) — difficult difficulty, modifications required.
Installation notes
Required modifications
Engine mounts: Innovative Mounts 88-91 Civic/CRX H/F-series conversion kit (available with or without a clutch actuator). Innovative says the stock passenger-side mount must be removed and a new passenger-side chassis mount welded in, and that a 90-93 Accord / 92-96 Prelude DX/LX-type rear T-bracket is required. Axles: Hasport HP-EFHAX (chromoly axle set for the H-series swap into 88-91 Civic/CRX, used with the hydro manual intermediate shaft) or Insane Shafts H22/H23 swap axles listed for EF Civic and CRX. EF cars have a cable clutch, so the hydraulic H-series gearbox needs the actuator or a hydraulic conversion. Also needs a shifter setup and ECU/harness.
Important caveats
- The Innovative kit is weld-on: the stock passenger-side chassis mount is removed and a new one welded in.
- A rear T-bracket from a 90-93 Accord or 92-96 Prelude (Innovative part 59630) is required.
- Hasport rates HP-EFHAX for street use, not drag racing.
- The EF is a light, short-wheelbase car; the H22 adds significant front weight, so brakes and suspension deserve attention.
