1 Select the correct fuse profile

The GE8 fuse box ships with low-profile mini fuses, but those generally will not seat in an Add-a-Fuse tap because their spade contacts remain hidden. Plan to use standard-profile (non-low-profile) mini fuses instead, since the tap relies on the taller, exposed spades. If you are unsure which fuse you are holding, compare it to a standard mini fuse in an automotive fuse chart. 2 Join the V1 power lead to the fuse tap

Strip roughly 1/4 inch of insulation from the red (+) lead of the V1 hardwire kit. Connect it to the pigtail wire on the Add-a-Fuse, either with the supplied blue buttsplice and a crimp or with a soldered joint sealed by heatshrink. Many taps arrive with the buttsplice already fitted to the pigtail, so often only the V1 red wire needs stripping and crimping.

3 Terminate the ground lead

Strip about 1/4 inch from the black wire of the V1 adapter and crimp a fork or ring terminal onto it. Size the terminal so it will pass over the screw that secures the top of the fuse box, which will serve as the chassis ground point.

4 Load the two fuses into the tap

Insert a 20A standard mini fuse into the tap slot nearest the plug prongs; this fuse protects the original circuit you are tapping into. Fit a smaller fuse in the remaining slot to protect the V1 branch on its own; a 7.5A fuse works well here.

Locate the 12V accessory fuse (roughly the second column, fourth position down) and pull it. Plug the Add-a-Fuse into that empty slot. Orientation is irrelevant here, because the detector is protected by its own dedicated inline fuse regardless of which way the tap faces.

6 Attach the ground

Fasten the fork or ring terminal on the black lead under the screw that anchors the top of the fuse box to the dash frame, then snug it back down.

7 Test before routing any cable

Connect the phone cable between the hardwire port and the V1, then switch on the ignition. The unit should power up immediately. If it stays dark, confirm the tap is seated by checking that the 12V accessory socket still works, and rule out a faulty cable by briefly running the V1 from its cigarette-lighter cord.

8 Run the phone cable to the windshield

Connect the phone cord to the hardwire adapter. Choose the 7-to-9-foot length if the V1 will sit to the right of the rearview mirror; a 6-foot cord suits a left-of-mirror mount or a run with zero slack. Feed the cable behind the dash starting at the left edge of the fuse box, guide it up the door trim to the base of the A-pillar, then slip it behind the headliner and lay it across the top of the windshield to the mount point, leaving a short tail hanging.

9 Tidy the fuse box area

Push the hardwire adapter around to the left side of the fuse box, next to the dash frame, so it sits out of the way. Secure it and dress the loose wiring with zip ties, velcro, or a similar fastener so nothing flaps around.

10 Mount and connect the V1

Fit the V1 high on the windshield using its suction-cup mount and plug in the phone cable. Mounting it high keeps the detector above your normal sightline and largely hidden from anyone looking in from outside the car.
