Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Confirm the starter is the fault
Before ordering parts, rule out the common look-alikes: a weak battery, corroded cables, or a failed fuel-pump relay can all imitate a bad starter. The symptom pattern on these cars is a solenoid click with no engine rotation, the instrument panel still lighting normally, and a buzz from the relay in the interior fuse panel. 2 Choose the correct replacement starter

3 Raise and secure the vehicle

4 Disconnect the battery

6 Locate the starter and remove the intake bracket
Find the starter by coming back a few inches from the oil-pan drain and following the engine wall; it sits in a shallow hollow and resembles a large silver cylinder. 7 Release the first clip and remove the mounting bolts
Two tab-like harness brackets ('ears') project from the pair of through-bolts that clamp the starter together. The one facing you carries an easy clip: reach in from above and push it up and off. The starter is held to the block by two 14 mm bolts, both of the long shaft-extension type. Break the lower one loose first; there is no leverage at the starter, so run a long extension out through the wheel well past the brake rotor and fit a breaker bar. Once the tension breaks it spins out. The upper bolt sits about three inches from an obstruction, so reach it with a short 14 mm socket, a universal joint, and extensions. Pull the upper bolt, then the lower; the starter will then hang loose.
8 Remove the stubborn pushpin clip and third bracket
The second ear bracket holds a four-prong pushpin-style clip that resists pliers. Wedge the flat, U-notched trim tool between the clip and the bracket and lever it up slowly and evenly; sacrificing one of the four legs is normal. A third harness bracket, a rectangular box between the engine and intake manifold, uses a simple clip: press its tab and lift the harness off.
9 Disconnect the electrical connections by feel
Two connections remain, both worked blind. Trace the main cable to the large terminal and peel its rubber boot back with your fingers only; a tool can puncture it and cost you a new harness. Beneath the boot is the retaining nut on the terminal stud. Room is minimal, so use a 1/4-inch drive with a 12 mm socket and a short mini breaker bar for just enough purchase; back the nut off without dropping it into the subframe, then free the cable end. Just to the left, nearer the starter base, a smaller clip retains the harness on a burred post; lift the clip body gently with an L-shaped pick until the harness releases.
10 Remove the old starter
With both bolts out, both terminals disconnected, and all clips released, the starter is free. Work it out through the wheel-well opening. Take a break before starting the reinstall.
11 Prepare and wire the new starter
Apply dielectric grease to the terminal stud, to its nut, and to the lip of the second (clip-type) connection. The main terminal is the hardest part of reassembly: seat the cable end onto the stud the correct way, slide the boot up out of the way, thread the nut, and torque it to 7 ft-lb. Then draw the boot back down so it fully covers the terminal, stretching it gently by hand and leaving as little bare wire exposed as possible. Snap the second connection into its clip.
12 Position and bolt in the new starter
Offer the starter up to the block; it seats flush only in the correct orientation. As a reference, with the unit in place the mounting-bolt hole is at roughly 12 o'clock, the small clip electrode just before 11 o'clock, and the large nut-secured electrode near 1 o'clock. Start the lower bolt first, holding the body with one hand while guiding the bolt with a socket and short extension, and run in a few threads. Find the upper hole by feel and start that bolt with a short socket and mini extension. With both threaded, tighten them to 33 ft-lb.
13 Reconnect the harness and reassemble
Refit the harness in reverse: clip the rectangular box bracket to the engine, then the pushpin clip, using a fresh clip or a zip tie if the original broke. Reinstall the intake-manifold bracket with its two 10 mm bolts and one 12 mm bolt, then refasten the splashguard.
14 Reconnect the battery and test
Reconnect both battery terminals, refit the wheel, and snug the lug nuts. Lower the car and torque the lug nuts to spec. Confirm the engine cranks and starts, then re-enter the radio security code.
