Unlike the 9th-generation cars, there is no menu option to switch this reminder off. This guide silences it at the source: a microswitch inside the ignition barrel that reports key presence to the multiplex integrated control unit (MICU). Interrupting that one signal stops the chime while leaving every other reminder - low fuel, seatbelt, lights-on, ice warning - fully functional, since those are driven separately through the same speaker. Two levels of the job are covered: unplugging the barrel connector completely (fastest, but the barrel then no longer lights as you insert the key), and cutting only the pink beep wire so that illumination is kept. Step-by-Step Instructions

1 Secure the car and choose your approach

Park on level ground, switch off the ignition and remove the key. Because you will be working alongside the steering column and its airbag wiring, disconnect the negative battery terminal first and wait a few minutes before continuing. Then decide which result you want. Unplugging the whole ignition-barrel connector is the quickest fix but also stops the barrel lighting up as you insert the key (it still lights once the ignition is switched on). Cutting only the pink key-detection wire silences the chime yet keeps that illumination. Splicing a small inline switch into that wire lets you re-enable the reminder later and avoids leaving a permanently broken circuit that a dealer HDS tester might flag.

2 Remove the lower side trim panel

Work along the seam of the small kick panel at the side of the lower dash - the one that also houses the under-dash fuel cut-off (inertia) switch - and ease it free with a flat-head screwdriver or plastic trim tool. Behind it sits a single retaining screw; take it out and set the panel aside. Keep clear of the fuel cut-off switch while you do this, as it is easily nudged and will trip.

3 Take off the steering column shroud

Release the shroud beneath the steering wheel with a firm, deliberate pull from each side near its base - timid pressure leaves the clips fighting you, while brute force snaps them, so aim between the two. Once the lower half starts to move, remove the three exposed screws and separate the upper and lower halves. Note that many owners reach the connector without pulling the dash at all, by freeing only the upper and lower steering-wheel covers plus the trim strip that runs along the top of the instrument cluster.

4 Locate the barrel connector and identify the wires

Look at the rear of the ignition barrel for its wiring connector. Four wires run into it. The pink/black pair carries the key-present signal to the MICU that triggers the chime, and the blue/white pair feeds the LED ring that lights the barrel as you climb in. Confirm which pair is which before touching anything, so that you disturb only the beep circuit and leave the illumination and other functions intact.

5 Disable the key-in chime

For the simplest result, hold the release tab on the back of the connector and draw it off the barrel; the latch is stiff, so this can take a few tries. To preserve the barrel illumination instead, isolate only the pink (pink/black) wire: cut it and insulate both ends with tape or heat-shrink, or solder an inline switch across the break so the reminder can be restored on demand. Be aware that pulling the whole connector also disables the barrel LED and whatever pins 3 and 4 feed, so use the wire-only method if that lighting matters to you.

6 Reassemble the trim

Refit everything in reverse. Bring the upper and lower steering-column halves back together, drive in the three screws, align the panel under the wheel so each clip meets its hole, then press the side kick panel back until it seats fully.

7 Reconnect the battery and test

Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Insert the key with a door open and confirm the chime is gone, then check that the remaining reminders - seatbelt, lights-on, low fuel - still sound normally. If the engine cranks but will not fire afterwards, the under-dash fuel cut-off switch was almost certainly tripped while you worked in the footwell; reset it and the car will start.

Pro Tips

  • 💡 The job can usually be completed without pulling the dash - freeing the two steering-wheel covers and partly releasing the trim above the instrument cluster is enough to reach the connector.
  • 💡 Do not simply unplug the dash speaker to kill the noise: every chime (low fuel, seatbelt, ice and engine warnings) uses it, so you would lose all audible warnings at once.
