Honda Accord Coupe (8th Gen) OEM Fog Light Installation
Introduction
This guide covers installing genuine OEM fog lights on the 8th-generation Honda Accord Coupe (2008-2012). The factory kit bundles the fog housings, the short bumper-level wiring harnesses, the replacement light-control stalk with a fog switch, and the mounting and grounding hardware. Trim level determines how much work is involved: EX and EX-L coupes already have the fog wiring routed behind the bumper, so the job is largely mechanical, while the LX-S has the molded fog openings but no factory wiring, meaning it needs the harness added before the lights will function. Note that even EX and EX-L cars ship with a plain stalk that lacks the fog switch, which is why the OEM kit supplies a new stalk. Aftermarket eBay kits often route to a separate dash switch and are a messier install, so an OEM kit is preferred for a factory-clean result. Doing this yourself avoids paying a shop and typically takes between 1.5 and 3 hours. Tools Required
- Socket and ratchet set
- Phillips screwdriver
- Long flat-blade screwdriver (for the steering column trim)
- Trim/panel clip removal tool
- Blankets or towels to protect the bumper
- Floor jack and jack stands (only if using the wheel-well access method instead of removing the bumper)
Parts Required
-
OEM fog light kit (fog housings, bumper wiring harness, replacement light-control stalk, mounting screws, ground screws, and zip-tie mounting clips)
-
Optional: HID bulb kit for the fogs
Safety Warnings
- ⚠ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working on the wiring or removing the light switch to avoid shorts.
- ⚠ If you jack up the car for the wheel-well method, support it on jack stands, never on the jack alone.
- ⚠ Ground the fog harness only at the dedicated grounding point provided; grounding elsewhere can leave the lights working incorrectly or not at all.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Disconnect the battery
Before touching any wiring, disconnect the negative cable at the battery. This prevents shorts while you connect the fog harness and remove the light-control stalk from the steering column.
2 Gain access to the fog light openings
The standard approach is to remove the front bumper cover. Release the push clips along the top and bottom edges, remove the fasteners at each side, and then ease the cover off the side clips gently so none of them snap. Set the removed cover face-up on blankets or towels so the paint is not scratched. Reinstalling the cover and aligning it correctly is easiest with a second person. As an alternative that avoids taking the bumper off entirely, raise the front of the car on jack stands, remove the front wheels, release the clips on the inner wheel-well liner, and peel the liner back behind the brake to reach the fog pockets. Either route reaches the same mounting area.
3 Remove the fog opening covers and save the screws
Each fog pocket is closed off by a housing cover held with three screws from behind. Remove those three screws and keep them safe. The same screws are reused later to bolt the actual fog lights into the bumper, so do not discard them.
4 Connect the wiring harness (per side)
On the passenger side, find the factory fog connector tucked away and secured with blue tape. Peel the tape off and free the connector. Locate the matching connector on the driver side as well. Mate the harness to the car by joining the brown connectors together on each side. On an LX-S there is no factory connector present, so the harness must be added to power the lights at all.
5 Secure the harness and ground it
Use the supplied zip ties with the built-in mounting clips to dress the harness. Cinch a clip around the wiring near the lower tape marker and push the clip into the frame. Attach the ground wire to the bare grounding hole on the frame using the screw included in the kit; use only that dedicated point so the circuit grounds properly. On the driver side there is a single correct ground location shared with the other ground leads, so unscrew that point, add the fog ground, and screw it back down. Zip tie any remaining slack so nothing rattles, and repeat the harness routing on both sides.
6 Mount the fog light housings
Take a fog light and hook its upper edge into the molded slot at the top of the fog pocket, which is shaped specifically to receive the light. Line up the mounting holes and drive in the three screws you saved from the cover to secure the housing. Repeat on the opposite side. Working one side fully before starting the other keeps the parts organized.
7 Replace the light-control stalk
The fog switch lives on the steering-column stalk, so the plain stalk must be swapped for the one in the kit. Pop the steering-column shroud apart with a long flat-blade screwdriver, starting at the left side; once one edge releases, the rest separates with light pressure. With the upper shroud off, remove the three screws on the underside of the column to free the switch assembly. Turn the steering wheel a quarter turn (90 degrees) to the left to expose the two screws holding the light switch. Take those out, unplug the connector at the back of the switch, and slide the old switch out to the left. Fit the new fog-equipped stalk, reconnect its plug, and rebuild the column shrouds.
8 Reassemble, reconnect, and test
Plug each fog housing into its harness connector. Refit the bumper cover (or the wheel-well liner and wheels if you used that method); getting the bumper aligned cleanly is much easier with a helper. Reconnect the negative battery cable, then switch on the fogs to confirm both light up.
9 Aim the fog lights
Aiming is straightforward. If you have fitted brighter HID bulbs, aim the beams lower than a standard halogen setting because the extra output can dazzle oncoming drivers when pointed too high.
Pro Tips
- 💡 The complete OEM kit is available from vendors such as College Hills Honda; the reference price in the thread was $200 (installation instructions: http://www.collegehillshonda.com/instructions/accord2/2011/foglights.pdf).
- 💡 EX and EX-L coupes have the bumper fog wiring from the factory; the LX-S has the fog cutouts but no wiring, so budget extra time to run the harness.
- 💡 Even wired EX/EX-L cars come with a stalk that has no fog switch, so the replacement stalk in the kit is required.
- 💡 If you plan to run HID bulbs in the fogs, 2000K was used in the thread for the fogs against 6000K low beams; 35W ballasts were noted.
- 💡 A cracked fog lens cannot be replaced on its own; the whole housing must be swapped.
