Installation notes

Yes — the base 5-lug front knuckles and hubs from a 2002–2006 Acura RSX (DC5), with RSX rear knuckles and rear disc brakes, fit a 2001–2005 Honda Civic (ES/EM2) when you also deal with the longer RSX lower ball joint (RSX front lower control arms, or the stock arms with tapered washers) and fit the matching rear brake parts. Two separate 7th-gen Civic parts-list guides (one on Honda-Tech, one on CivicForums) describe the conversion. Use the base RSX knuckle on a D17-powered car, because the stock Civic axles spline into the base RSX hub. norcalem2's guide gives the result as 5x114.3 with a +45 mm stock offset. 2001–2002 cars need extra work on the strut-to-knuckle bolts.

Required modifications

Front: fit RSX base front knuckles with hubs. The stock Civic axles spline into the base RSX hub. The RSX Type-S hub does not take Civic axles, so only use Type-S knuckles if the car is K-swapped with matching axles (one owner instead fitted base RSX/EP3 hubs and bearings into Type-S knuckles). Rear: fit RSX (base or Type-S) rear knuckles, rear calipers, discs, brake hoses, and the RSX/EP3 parking brake cables. Lower control arms: the RSX lower ball joints are about 2 mm longer than the Civic ones. WannaBFast's guide fits RSX front lower control arms, or keeps the stock arms with tapered washers to take up the slack. norcalem2's guide says the arms must be changed on 2001–2002 cars, with the same tapered-washer alternative. Struts: 2003–2005 cars need no strut change. On 2001–2002 cars, either fit later-style struts and knuckle bolts or drill out the strut holes for the larger bolts. Get an alignment when you're done.

Caution

Important caveats

  • RSX Type-S front knuckles and hubs do not spline to the Civic axles. Use base RSX knuckles unless the car has a K-swap with matching axles.
  • Lower control arms: the RSX lower ball joint is about 2 mm longer than the Civic one. One guide fits RSX front lower arms or packs the stock arms with tapered washers. The other says the arms must be changed on 2001–2002 cars, again with tapered washers as the alternative. Don't run the stock arms without one of these fixes; the guide warns of play and loose suspension.
  • On 2001–2002 cars the strut-to-knuckle bolts differ. Either fit later struts and bolts or drill the strut holes for the larger bolts.
  • Neither guide gives RSX model years for the base knuckles. MotoIQ notes that 2005–2006 RSX Type-S knuckles have a larger ball-joint stud, so check base 2005–2006 parts against your arms before buying.
  • The rear needs RSX rear calipers, hoses and parking brake cables as well as the knuckles. Drum-brake rear parts can't be reused.
  • ABS: the guides disagree on whether the Civic ABS sensors keep working. One owner reports ABS still worked with the Civic sensors; the other guide points to the RSX Type-S ABS parts. Confirm the ABS light is out and ABS works before driving on the road.
