D16Z6 SOHC VTEC engine and hydraulic transmission
into Civic EF (from Civic Si)
Yes: the D16Z6 SOHC VTEC engine and hydraulic transmission from the Civic Si (1992-1995) fits the Civic EF (1988-1991) — moderate difficulty, modifications required.
Installation notes
Required modifications
Engine mounts: Hasport EFD2 (the 92-95 Civic D-series 2-bolt block bracket version of the EFSTK kit) or Innovative 49152 (88-91 Civic/CRX with 92+ D-series engines, manual hydraulic transmission or cable-to-hydraulic conversion). Clutch: to run the 92-95 hydraulic transmission, add Hasport EFDHC (rear bracket, transmission bracket and lever assembly so the EF clutch cable operates the hydraulic gearbox) or use the actuator offered with the Innovative kit. Innovative says the original timing-belt post mount is required. Also wiring/ECU for the OBD1 VTEC engine in the OBD0 EF chassis, axles and shift linkage.
Important caveats
- The EF is an OBD0 chassis and the D16Z6 is OBD1, so the engine harness and ECU need conversion.
- Innovative says pre-1992 D-series engines use a different driver-side mount and a different kit (49151).
- Hasport notes its EF stock-replacement kit is not for the AWD Civic wagon.
- This entry covers the complete D16Z6 engine and transmission, not head-only "mini-me" style conversions.
