Installation notes

Yes, as a largely custom build — a B-series engine with the AWD hydraulic manual transmission from a 1997–2001 Honda CR-V (RD1) can be mounted in a 1988–1991 Honda Civic or CRX (EF) manual chassis using Hasport's EF AWD mounts, but the rear differential, driveshaft and viscous coupler mounting have to be fabricated, because no bolt-in EF rear driveline kit was found. Hasport sells EFBAWD for a B-series engine and AWD transmission in the 88–91 Civic/CRX (replacing the left, right and rear mounts, with rear bracket EFRBAWD), and a separate EFBRHAWD mount that allows a B-series hydraulic manual AWD transmission in the 88–91 Civic/CRX manual chassis. Driveshaft Shop lists AWD B-series conversion rear axles, built around the 88–91 Wagon rear differential, for the 88–00 Civic.

Required modifications

Engine/transmission mounts: Hasport EFBAWD (B-series engine with AWD transmission in the 88-91 Civic/CRX; replaces left, right and rear mounts and includes rear bracket EFRBAWD). Hasport's EFBRHAWD mount allows a B-series hydraulic manual AWD transmission in the 88-91 Civic/CRX manual chassis. Hasport says neither works with the factory AWD Civic Wagon chassis. Axles: Driveshaft Shop AWD B-series conversion rear axles (510077), listed for the 88-00 Civic and built around the 88-91 Wagon/Shuttle 25-spline rear differential. Rear differential mounting, driveshaft and viscous coupler mounting are fabricated or sourced separately; no EF-specific rear differential kit was found in the catalogues checked.

Caution

Important caveats

  • Hasport says these mounts do not fit the factory AWD (Real Time 4WD) Civic Wagon chassis.
  • Hasport's EFBRHAWD mount is listed for the 88-91 Civic/CRX manual chassis only.
  • No bolt-in rear differential mount kit for the EF was found; expect to fabricate rear driveline mounting.
  • The EF is a cable-clutch car and the CR-V gearbox is hydraulic, so a hydraulic clutch conversion is needed.
  • Driveshaft Shop's axles are built for the 88-91 Wagon 25-spline rear differential with 23-spline outers and hubs.
