TSX Front Brake Upgrade for the 8th-Generation Honda Civic (LX/EX)
Introduction
The base and mid-trim 8th-generation Civic ships with small front rotors that are easily overwhelmed and prone to warping under repeated heavy use. Rather than paying for a full aftermarket big-brake kit, you can fit the larger front calipers, brackets and rotors from a 2006 Acura TSX, which share the Civic's mounting geometry and bolt onto the factory knuckle. This guide covers the complete swap: pulling the stock front hardware, clearancing the dust shield for the larger rotor, mounting the TSX caliper and bracket, plumbing braided front lines, swapping the rear brake lines, and bleeding the system. It applies to the 2006-2011 Civic (LX and EX, front-drum and rear-drum cars included) and delivers noticeably stronger, more fade-resistant braking for a modest parts cost. Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Lift the car and remove the front wheel
Loosen the front lug nuts, raise the corner with a floor jack and set the chassis on a jack stand before removing the wheel. Never work under a car supported only by a jack. Do one corner at a time so you always have a reference for how the opposite side goes back together.
2 Strip the stock front brake off the knuckle
On the back of the assembly you will find four fasteners: two clamp the caliper to its bracket, and two secure the bracket to the knuckle. Because you are replacing the whole corner, back out the two bracket-to-knuckle bolts and lift the caliper and bracket away as a unit, leaving the pads in place. Support the caliper so it does not hang by the flexible line. Remove the two small retaining screws in the rotor face and pull the rotor off the hub.
3 Clearance the dust shield for the larger rotor
The bigger TSX rotor sits wider than the factory shield allows, so the backing plate must be moved out of its path. Bending is enough; cutting metal away is unnecessary. Press the shield inward toward the centreline of the car so it no longer overlaps the rotor's inner face, otherwise it will contact the rotor and produce a metallic squeal. Give extra attention to the lower section near the ball joint. Refit the rotor and run the retaining screws in to hold it, then use a flat-head screwdriver to lever any remaining high spots clear. Cosmetic imperfection here is fine; the shield is hidden once the wheel is on.
4 Mount the TSX rotor and caliper assembly
With the rotor seated and its screws snug, position the TSX caliper and bracket over the rotor and thread the two bracket-to-knuckle bolts into the knuckle. Tighten the bracket bolts fully at this stage. Leave the two caliper-to-bracket bolts for later, since you will open the caliper again to fit the pads.
5 Attach the braided line to the caliper
Fit the caliper end of the new braided line before connecting it to the car, which keeps spilled fluid to a minimum. The banjo fitting stacks in a specific order: a copper crush washer, then the line's banjo eye, then a second copper washer, then the banjo bolt. Thread that sandwich into the caliper and snug it. Wear gloves you do not mind ruining, as brake fluid will get on everything.
6 Swap the flexible line at the chassis end
Fit the 10mm flare-nut wrench to the hard-line fitting for maximum contact, since these nuts strip easily; vice-grips clamped tight will break a stubborn nut loose if you lack the proper wrench. Crack the fitting, then finish with a plain 10mm open-end wrench. Pop the retaining clip out with a flat-head screwdriver. Work quickly to limit fluid loss: thread the new braided line in, tighten the fitting, and reseat the metal clip so the line cannot flop around.
7 Grease and fit the pads, then close the caliper
Prepare the pads as for any pad service and apply brake grease to the slide pins so the caliper moves freely. Lift the caliper body off, set the pads into the bracket, and refit the caliper over them. Then run down every fastener a final time: the caliper-to-bracket bolts, the bracket-to-knuckle bolts, and the line fitting.
8 Repeat on the opposite front corner and check wheel clearance
Carry out the same procedure on the other side. Before torquing the wheels back on, confirm the wheel clears the larger caliper. Factory EX steel wheels foul the TSX calipers; a reporting owner needed 15mm spacers as a stopgap while sourcing SI alloy wheels, which clear without help. The original builder ran 5mm spacers. Choose SI-style alloys or an appropriate spacer thickness for your wheels.
9 Replace the rear brake lines
The rear is a straight line-for-line swap on drum cars. There are two fittings per side. One line bolts to the inner wheel-well; note that its bracket and hose are cast as a single part, so the chassis-side bracket is sacrificed and not reused. The other fitting sits directly behind the drum and is held by a metal clip that pries out easily with a flat-head screwdriver. Crack both fittings with the flare-nut wrench or vice-grips, then change one end at a time: disconnect an old end, connect the matching new end and snug it, then do the second end. Once both are on, torque them down firmly so there are no leaks.
10 Bleed the brakes in sequence
After both rear lines are in, bleed the system working from the wheel farthest from the master cylinder to the nearest: passenger rear, then driver rear, then passenger front, then driver front. Keep the reservoir topped up throughout so no air is drawn in. Confirm a firm pedal before the car moves.
11 Bed in the new pads and rotors
If the rotors carry a GeoMet coating, do not clean it off before fitting; it is meant to wear away in service. Expect growling or grinding, along with heavier dust, over roughly the initial few hundred miles of driving, after which the coating burns away and the pads seat. This is normal, not a fault. After a proper bedding drive the system settles into strong, confident stops in wet and dry conditions.

- 💡 Fitting the braided line to the caliper first, before the chassis end, keeps dripped fluid to a minimum.
- 💡 A 10mm flare-nut wrench grips the line nut on more faces than an open-end and greatly reduces the chance of rounding it; tightly clamped vice-grips are a workable fallback.
- 💡 SI alloy wheels clear the larger calipers without spacers; budget for wheels or spacers as part of the job.
