Honda CR-Z HID Fog Light Conversion
Introduction
This guide covers swapping the factory halogen fog lights on a second-generation Honda CR-Z for an HID conversion kit, using a 2011 EX as the reference car. Beyond the brighter output, owners commonly make the change because the stock halogen bulbs run hot; the HID setup measured noticeably cooler in the same housings. The job involves removing the front bumper to reach the fog light housings, transferring the factory wiring over to each ballast, fitting the new HID bulbs, and finding a safe home for the ballasts. Color temperature is personal preference: 6000K reads whiter/bluer while 4300K puts out more usable light on the road. No signal decoder or relay harness is required on this platform, since the kit runs as a straight ballast-to-bulb conversion. Budget extra care around the airbag crash sensors when mounting the ballasts. Tools Required
- Honda trim removal tool
- Socket/ratchet set for bumper bolts
- Phillips screwdriver
- Clip/panel removal tool
- Zip ties
- Vinyl electrical tape
- Double-sided (3M) mounting tape
- Helm factory service manual (reference)
Parts Required
-
HID fog light conversion kit (ballasts and bulbs), e.g. iJDMToy 6000K or 4300K
Safety Warnings
- ⚠ Do not mount the ballast against or beside the SRS airbag crash sensors. A loose or overheating ballast next to a sensor can set off the airbags, an expensive repair.
- ⚠ Keep the halogen bulb from contacting the metal shield inside the housing during removal; the glass can shatter violently.
- ⚠ Aftermarket ballasts can fail in as little as ~18 months, so use a mounting location you can re-inspect.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Detach the Bumper Side Covers
Work at each front corner and release the small side covers that overlap the ends of the bumper. Use the trim removal tool to free their clips without marring the paint. Repeat on both the left and right sides.
2 Remove the Center Seal and Upper Beam
Pop the clips retaining the center seal across the top of the bumper. Next, take out the center upper beam, which is held by a combination of bolts and clips. This beam seats tightly under a bolt, so once its fasteners are out, lift it upward to unseat it. Loosening the hood latch hook first frees enough clearance to lift the beam clear.
3 Remove the Front Bumper
Extract the remaining clips and screws securing the bumper, then draw it forward. The outer corners hook into the headlight edges, so pull gently at those points to avoid snapping the tabs. With the bumper off, unplug the two fog light connectors.
4 Pull the OEM Halogen Bulbs
Rotate each factory halogen roughly a quarter turn and withdraw it from the housing. Keep the bulb clear of the metal reflector shield inside the housing; brushing the glass against it can shatter the bulb, sending shards out of the assembly.
5 Wire Each Ballast to the Factory Harness
Join the ballast power leads to the OEM fog light connector. The factory wires are green and black, with green as the positive. Land the red (positive) ballast lead on the green wire, then black to black. Wrap each joint in vinyl electrical tape and cover the pair so the bare tips cannot touch. Note that some kit versions instead ship keyed 2-pin male/female connectors that clip together and need no tape.
6 Connect and Seat the HID Bulbs
Attach the HID bulb leads to the ballast output and tape those joints for security. Insert each bulb into the housing; the base carries three locating tabs that guide it in and lock against the housing stop. The fit is tight, so seat it deliberately until it catches.
7 Mount the Ballasts Clear of the Crash Sensors
Fix each ballast to structure such as the radiator support tube on the underside of the bumper area. Back the mount with double-sided tape and reinforce with zip ties. Keep the ballast and its ties well away from the airbag (SRS) crash sensors; a ballast that works loose, or overheats and burns, sitting against a sensor can trigger the airbags. Position it below the sensor and inspect the mount periodically.
8 Reinstall the Bumper and Test
Reconnect the fog light connectors and refit the bumper by seating its center first, then working outward on each side to re-clip and align it. Reinstall the upper beam, center seal, and side covers, and snug the hood hook. Switch on the fog lights to confirm both HID bulbs strike before final reassembly.
Pro Tips
- 💡 If you have small hands, some owners skip most of the bumper teardown by peeling back the wheel well liner and reaching the fog housing from inside the fender.
- 💡 The bulb base tabs are slightly oversized for the housing openings. Lightly filing or Dremeling the square tab round and shortening the angled tabs lets the bulb seat without snapping a tab off.
- 💡 Color is preference: 6000K looks whiter/bluer, while 4300K generally throws more usable light.
- 💡 No decoder or relay harness is needed on this car; those are typically only required on some European vehicles.
