Acura RDX Shift Knob and Shift Indicator Bulb Replacement
Introduction
This guide covers removing the automatic-shifter knob and replacing the small shift-position indicator bulb on the first-generation Acura RDX. Do it to swap a worn or discolored factory knob for a leather one, to restore a burned-out gear-position indicator that no longer lights the selected gear, or as the first stage of pulling the upper console cover. No special tools are needed beyond plastic trim picks and a Phillips screwdriver, and the whole job is reversible with a few snap-fit and screw connections. You will move the shifter through several positions with the engine off, so the key must be turned on to release the shift lock, and the black button on top of the lever unlocks it as required. Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Prepare the vehicle and unlock the shifter
Park on flat ground and set the parking brake firmly. Turn the ignition key to the accessory/on position to release the shift lock, but leave the engine off. With the brake pedal pressed, move the lever into the Sport gate. You will reposition the shifter repeatedly during the job; press the black release button on top of the lever whenever you need to move it while it is locked.
2 Pry off the trigger bezel
Slip a plastic trim tool under the edge of the trigger bezel and work it loose starting from the sides rather than the ends. The bezel seats with its wider tab toward the top, so note that orientation now to make refitting straightforward later.
3 Release and lower the shift boot
Tip the lever toward vertical. Two springy plastic tabs, one on each side of the shaft just below the trim ring, lock the boot to the knob. Press both tabs inward with light pressure and slide the boot down the shaft to expose the fasteners beneath it.
4 Remove the two knob screws
Return the lever to Sport and drop the loosened collar and boot far enough to reveal two cross-tip screws that hold the knob. Back both screws out and keep them together so they are not lost.
5 Lift off the shift knob
Move the lever to a forward position and pull the knob straight up off the shaft. The two knob-to-collar tabs you released earlier are now visible. If you only wanted to change the knob, fit the replacement, drive in the two screws, raise the collar, and clip the bezel back on with its wide tab up; the knob job is complete at this point.
6 Free the indicator plate
To reach the bulb, ease the shift-indicator plate upward with a plastic tool, beginning on the left, curving around the rear, and finishing on the right so the plate lifts evenly without cracking the trim.
7 Unclip the indicator light wire
Raise the boot to expose the indicator light at the left front of the shifter. Its feed wire is captured under a small clip; pop the wire out of that clip to gain the slack needed to lift the plate clear.
8 Remove the plate and bulb socket
Slide the plate up and off the shaft, nudging the lever to whatever angle clears it best. With the plate free, rotate the bulb socket a quarter turn to unlock it from the plate and set the boot and plate assembly aside.
9 Replace the indicator bulb
The old bulb slides straight out of the socket. Fit a compatible instrument bulb in its place; a Sylvania 74 rated 14V, 1.4W from any auto parts store works. Before reassembling anything, switch on the parking lights to confirm the new bulb illuminates.
10 Reassemble the shifter
Lock the socket back into the plate with a quarter turn, slide the plate down over the shaft, and re-seat the light wire in its clip. Snap the plate back into place, refit the knob and its two screws, raise the collar, and press the trigger bezel home with the wide tab up.
Pro Tips
- 💡 If the boot will not drop no matter how hard you squeeze, the trigger bezel is almost certainly still in place. Remove the bezel first, then the two side tabs need only a light inward push to let the boot slide down.
- 💡 You can change the bulb without fully removing the knob. It is fiddlier, but the plate can be raised just enough beneath the knob to reach the light.
- 💡 Drop the two screws and the trigger bezel into a small bag while they are off the car so they do not disappear into the console.
