Acura RDX Console Compartment Light: Bulb Replacement and Wire Slack Fix
Introduction
On the first-generation Acura RDX, the small courtesy lamp inside the center console storage compartment eventually burns out. Owners who try to change it often discover the factory wiring pigtail feeding the socket is too short to pull the lamp clear of the opening, which makes the swap far more awkward than it should be. The service manual actually calls for roughly 7 cm of free pigtail, and that slack is present in the harness but hidden: at the factory the wire's retention clip was taped much too far down the lead. Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Remove the shift assembly and top console cover, then disconnect the battery
This job assumes the shift knob and boot assembly and the top console cover are already off; follow those two separate procedures first so the inside of the console is exposed. Because SRS airbag wiring runs through this area, disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10 mm wrench before touching anything else. Wear eye and hand protection while working.
2 Locate the lamp, its harness, and the retention clip
Look at the front of the opened console cavity. You will see the console power outlet alongside the small lamp and its short lead. Find the plastic retention clip that anchors the wire to the metal frame, and note the pair of round mounting holes next to it. The clip belongs in the upper hole; keep that in mind for reassembly. Observe how little free wire the lamp has in its as-delivered state.
3 Release the wire retention clip from the frame
Draw the clip away from the metal frame just slightly, then press its locking tabs inward using your thinnest plastic pry tool. It will pop free of the upper round hole. Setting the clip loose is what lets you work extra length out of the lead in a later step.
4 Free the lamp and disconnect the socket
The lamp is held by a spring clip at the top and another at the bottom. Ease it out gently; it naturally rotates on the way out because the socket hangs off its right-hand side. Let it pivot rather than forcing it straight. With the clip released, there is now enough slack to twist the socket a quarter turn and separate it from the lamp.
5 Draw the assembly out and fit the new bulb
Feed the socket and lamp forward through the console hole and pull them up where you can handle them easily. Install a fresh 14 V, 1.4 W bulb (Sylvania 74 or compatible). If a bulb change is all you want, you could reassemble from here, but the lead will be just as short the next time it burns out, so continue to the wire fix.
6 Reposition the retention clip to expose the factory slack
Unwrap the electrical tape that binds the retention clip to the wire. Never cut the tape off, as the blade can nick the wire insulation. Slide the clip toward the fixed origin end of the lead, test-fitting as you go to gauge the amount of free wire required for easing the socket back comfortably into the console. Once positioned, wrap it back down firmly with fresh electrical tape. This recovers the roughly 7 cm of pigtail the service manual intended.
7 Reinstall the lamp and snap the clip home
Feed the socket back through the opening and give it a quarter turn to lock it into the lamp, keeping the socket oriented to the right. Work the lamp back under its top and bottom spring clips until it seats. Tuck the extra pigtail down out of the way and press the retention clip firmly home in that upper round hole. There will now be ample wire for a normal bulb change in the future.
8 Reassemble and reconnect the battery
Refit the top console cover, then the shift knob and indicator plate, reversing the two removal procedures you did at the start. Reconnect the negative battery cable and confirm the compartment light works.
