JDM K20A (Type R) engine and 6-speed
into RSX (from Integra Type R)
Yes: the JDM K20A (Type R) engine and 6-speed from the Integra Type R (2001-2006) fits the RSX (2002-2004) — moderate difficulty, modifications required.
Installation notes
Required modifications
Mounts: none needed — the JDM K20A came in the same DC5 chassis in Japan. ECU: Hondata KPro supports the 2002-2004 RSX Type-S (PRB) and base 5-speed (PND) ECUs and the 2001-2006 JDM DC5 Integra Type R (PRC) ECU; Hondata states engine swaps must use a 02-04 engine harness and 02-04 transmission. Base RSX (K20A3, 5-speed): the K20A3 5-speed engine harness has no connector for the 6-speed's reverse lockout solenoid; Hybrid Racing says this is not necessary, but keeping that function needs a 6-speed harness and ECU. Harness: the JDM K20A harness is made for RHD cars and is shorter; most US cars keep a K20A2 (Type-S) harness. Keep the immobilizer working with the RSX ECU/KPro.
Important caveats
- Hybrid Racing warns the JDM K20A engine harness is built for right-hand-drive cars, is shorter than LHD versions and lacks the oil pressure switch connector.
- The K20A3 (base RSX) harness is for 5-speed transmissions and lacks the reverse lockout connector a 6-speed uses.
- Hondata's 05-06 RSX KPro is only certified in an 05-06 RSX; for an 02-04 RSX use the 02-04 KPro/ECU.
- Imported 'JDM K20A' engines come from the Integra Type R, Civic Type R and Accord Euro R; Wikipedia lists the Type R engines with PRC intake manifolds and the Euro R with RBC, so confirm what you are buying.
