Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Assemble the components and dash kit
Confirm every part before touching the car. This build uses a single-DIN Clarion VX401 head unit, a Metra dash kit (side brackets, wiring harness, antenna adapter, and several interchangeable trim overlays), a db Link PK4Z 4-gauge amplifier wiring kit, an MB Quart FX1.600 monoblock amplifier, and a Clarion 12-inch dual 4-ohm DVC subwoofer in an enclosure. The Metra kit includes multiple faceplate trims sized for the GE8 dash; select the overlay that sits flush. The instructions below assume a dual-voice-coil subwoofer paired with a mono amplifier.
2 Bracket the head unit before fitting it
Attach the Metra side brackets to the receiver first, then insert the assembly into the dash. Fitting the chassis and bracketing afterward is the wrong sequence and tempts you into grinding metal that never needs it. The Clarion chassis has recessed, stamped screw bosses, so the short screws in the Metra kit cannot reach the threads. Swap them for slightly longer M5 machine screws, sold by length at a hardware store, and test-fit until the bracket seats flush. Receivers with flush screw holes, such as many Pioneer units, may not need this change.
3 Build and connect the wiring harness
Splice the Metra harness to the factory radio connector by matching wire colors, then solder each joint and seal it with heat-shrink tubing. Treat the amplifier turn-on lead deliberately: the adapter's blue/white wire is a factory-amp remote that the Fit never uses, so leave it disconnected on the vehicle side. Instead, take the thin blue remote wire from the db Link kit and join it to the head unit's own switched remote output, so the amplifier powers up only with the stereo. Connect the solid blue power-antenna lead as well; omitting it kills AM reception and weakens FM.
4 Remove the factory head unit
Detach the small trim panel beneath the hazard and accessory switches to expose the fasteners. One screw hides beside the pale vent housing and takes a 7mm driver or a Phillips bit, but its recess is deep, so reach it with the longest screwdriver available. Once that screw is out and the retaining clips release, the factory unit slides forward and the harness is accessible. Reinstallation is simply this sequence in reverse.
5 Route the amplifier power cable from the battery
Run the 4-gauge positive cable from the battery to the rear of the car. Crimp a ring terminal at the battery post, place the inline fuse holder within roughly a foot of the positive terminal, and feed the cable through the firewall grommet. Coat both the cable and the grommet with WD-40 and open the grommet with progressively larger tools rather than cutting it; a knife leaves a gap that will not reseal, while a lubricated push keeps the pass-through airtight. Removing the cold-air intake improves access. Secure the run with zip ties in at least two spots, then continue the cable along the driver-side sill under the trim to the hatch.
6 Route the RCA and remote wiring on the opposite side
Keep signal cables away from the power cable to avoid induced noise: run the RCA leads and the amplifier remote wire down the passenger side while the power feed stays on the driver side. Drop the glove box the same way you would to service the cabin air filter, by opening it and squeezing the sides inward until it swings to its lowest position. Feed the RCAs and remote wire behind the box, along the door sill, and tuck everything under the trim toward the rear.
7 Wire the subwoofer for a 2-ohm mono load
The subwoofer has dual 4-ohm voice coils and the amplifier is a monoblock. Wire the two coils in parallel, joining both positive terminals together and both negative terminals together, to present a 2-ohm load to the amp. Do not wire the coils in series: two 4-ohm coils in series make an 8-ohm load, which starves a mono amp and plays quietly. The original build was mistakenly wired in series; moving to the parallel 2-ohm configuration roughly doubled output. Mount the sub to the enclosure with #8 wood screws seated over the woofer's rubber gasket, predrilling the pilot holes first. Do not overtighten the coil terminals, since clamping too hard can shear a conductor.
8 Mount and ground the amplifier and bass control
Fix the amplifier in the hatch area and ground it to a factory bolt in the cargo well using a short, clean ground strap. Crimp the kit's ring or spade terminals onto stripped wire ends, then lock down the power, ground, remote, and RCA connections. Mount the bass remote where a factory gap already exists behind the dash trim; backing it with a small wood block lets you use an existing opening instead of drilling into the dash.
9 Bypass the parking-brake video lockout
Video-capable head units disable on-screen playback until the parking-brake wire is grounded. Grounding it permanently does not satisfy this receiver, because it looks for the signal switching on and off rather than a steady ground. Wire the head unit's parking-brake lead through an inexpensive toggle switch to a chassis ground screw, and flip the toggle to pass the check. Use this only when the vehicle is parked.
10 Secure the enclosure and reassemble
Anchor the enclosure so it cannot shift under braking. The spare-tire cover is only MDF, so fasten the box with small L brackets and half-inch screws, or use heavy velcro strips to avoid drilling holes at all. Reinstall every panel in reverse order, tucking wires under the trim for a hidden finish. When reconnecting the battery, remember that presets and audio settings reset and must be re-entered.
