Honda Fit (GD) Cupholder LED Illumination Upgrade
Introduction
The first-generation Honda Fit places a pair of clear lenses beneath the climate controls so that a small amount of dashboard backlight reaches the cupholders, but US-market cars have no dedicated bulb there and the glow is barely perceptible after dark. This guide covers replacing that weak light bleed with one or two bright LEDs mounted directly behind those lenses, so the cupholder pocket is clearly lit whenever the running lights are switched on. It applies to the GD-chassis Fit (roughly the 2007-2008 US cars) and taps the existing climate-control lighting feed, so no factory wire needs to be permanently cut. Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Remove the trim panel below the climate controls
Locate the single Phillips screw hidden directly under the climate-control unit and remove it. Then work around the perimeter of the plastic panel with a soft trim tool, gently releasing each retaining clip until the panel comes free. If no proper trim tool is on hand, pad the tip of a flat-blade screwdriver with a wrap of electrical tape so it does not scar the plastic. Take your time along the edges; the clips can be stiff and their metal edges are sharp.
2 Slide out the two clear lenses
Move the removed panel to a comfortable bench or table. On the back face you will find two small clear plastic lenses that normally let stock backlight seep through to the cupholders. Slide each lens out of its channel so the openings are clear for the LEDs.
3 Dry-fit and aim the LED brackets
Before bonding anything, hold each LED holder against its lens opening and decide on placement. Follow the arrow marks on the bracket so the emitter faces toward the cupholder. Sit the LED as far to the rear as the holder allows; looking through the mounting holes confirms that a rearward position keeps the beam centered over the cupholder once the panel is reinstalled.
4 Clean the surface and bond the brackets
Wet a cotton swab or pad with rubbing alcohol and thoroughly clean the tab area where the tape will grip, then give it a couple of minutes to flash off completely. Peel the backing from the 3M tape, set each bracket with the LED pushed fully rearward, and hold firm pressure for 30-45 seconds. This exterior-grade adhesive holds well once it has been pressed and given a few minutes to set.
5 Seat the LEDs in their holders
Press each LED into its holder, working it in until it seats and resists being pulled back out. For extra insurance, stretch a short piece of electrical tape and wrap it across the LED and the clear lens to lock the emitter in position. This retention step is optional but helps keep the aim from shifting.
6 Block the factory light bleed
Back at the car, cover the two pre-drilled holes behind the climate controls with a strip of electrical tape. Sealing these openings stops the dim stock backlight from leaking through and washing out the appearance of the new LEDs.
7 Tap into the climate-control harness
Unplug the connector on the left side of the climate-control assembly; it releases with a light squeeze of its clip. Feed the tinned lead ends into the rear of the factory connector's terminal openings, matching polarity: the solid red wire is positive (+) and the red wire with a black stripe is the ground (-). LEDs conduct in only one direction, so if the light stays dark, reverse the two leads and try again. Make sure each lead makes solid metal-to-metal contact, and handle the emitters carefully since LEDs are static-sensitive.
8 Test with the lights on
This circuit is only live when the exterior lamps are on, so switch on the headlights or running lights before judging the result. Confirm that every LED illuminates. If nothing lights, recheck polarity and the seating of the leads rather than assuming the LEDs have failed.
9 Secure the wiring and reassemble
Once the LEDs light reliably, wrap the tap point to the factory connector with electrical tape; stretch the tape as you go so its adhesive activates and grips tightly. Plug the connector back into the climate-control unit and test one final time. Then reseat the trim panel, press each clip home, and reinstall the Phillips screw to finish.
