DIY Carbon Fiber Coating for Trim and Cover Panels
Introduction
This guide covers laying a decorative carbon fiber skin over an existing plastic or painted part, using cloth and epoxy resin rather than molded pre-preg. It is a cosmetic and skill-building process: you coat a stock piece so the woven finish shows through a clear resin surface, which is far cheaper than buying finished carbon parts. The gas-filler door is used as the worked example because it combines a curved surface, rounded edges, plus a fit that has to sit flush, so the method transfers directly to interior surrounds, engine-bay covers, and similar trim. It applies to the Acura RSX and, since the technique is not vehicle-specific, to nearly any removable plastic or painted panel on a Honda or Acura. Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Set up a ventilated workspace and stage materials
Work where you have airflow, or at least near an openable window or door so you can clear fumes if they become bothersome. Cover the bench or floor beneath the part with cardboard topped by plastic sheeting, because excess resin drips and runs off the edges as it cures and will ruin the surface below. Have gloves, mixing cups, spoons, the torch, and your pre-cut cloth all within reach before you start mixing resin.
2 Remove the part from the vehicle
Detach the piece completely so every face and edge can be worked. On the gas-filler door, two 10mm fasteners hold it in place; a socket extension gives the clearance needed to reach and turn them. Trim panels and covers follow the same principle of full removal.
3 Clean and scuff the show surface
Wash the part with dish soap to strip wax and oils. Abrade the surface that will show, using anywhere from 60 to 600 grit. A finer 600 grit leaves shallow scratches you can later buff out if you change your mind, while coarse grit cuts deeper and is harder to reverse. Wash the part a second time to remove all sanding residue before any resin touches it.
4 Tape and cut the carbon fiber cloth
Rest the part face-down on the weave to judge size, allowing 1.5 to 2 inches of overhang on every side. Because a raw edge frays and unravels, run masking tape across the intended cut line and slice down the middle of the tape; tape any fraying roll edge as well. A single yard of the 50 inch cloth yields enough for many small pieces, so a spoiled cut is not a costly mistake.
5 Mask off hinges and moving hardware
Cover any hinge, catch, or rubber stop with tape so the repeated resin coats cannot bond to them. On the gas door this means the two rubber nubs that hold it shut and the entire hinge. If cured resin locks that hardware, the door will no longer latch, and prying the coating off to free it risks damaging the mechanism.
6 Apply the tack coat
Prop the part a few inches above the bench so overhanging cloth cannot drape down and stick to the surface below; an empty mixing cup works. Wearing nitrile gloves, mix a small batch at the 4:1 ratio, roughly a quarter pump of hardener to one full pump of resin, and spread it evenly across the show face with a spoon. Let it stand about 15 to 20 minutes until it turns tacky. Warmer air thickens it faster, so judge by feel.
7 Lay and saturate the cloth
Set the cut weave onto the tacky surface, centered so the overhang is even on all sides. Press it down and gently work the fabric into the resin so it wets through completely and lies flat against the part, leaving no resin gap trapped underneath. Now mix a full 5oz batch, one pump of hardener to four pumps of resin at roughly 1oz per pump, and use it to saturate any still-dry areas, including cloth folded over the edges.
8 Chase out air bubbles with the torch
After every resin coat, pass a propane torch flame briefly over the surface, keeping it in constant motion and never letting the visible flame contact the piece. The heat draws out trapped air. Bubbles left behind print through the coats that follow and leave a cloudy, distorted finish.
9 Build up the flow coats
Pour another full batch in wide zig-zags and let it self-level. Where a spot resists leveling, skim only the very top gently with a putty knife rather than dragging across the weave, which would ruin it. Allow about 5 minutes between coats. Keep adding coats until no weave texture can be felt through the resin. When the resin stops self-leveling readily, you are near enough; any surplus simply runs off the sides and lengthens the cure.
10 Let the resin cure
Allow the coating to harden undisturbed. The resin cures in about 3 to 4 hours, but leaving it overnight before handling is the safer choice. It is done when the resin has gone fully clear and the overhanging edges feel solid; test those edges rather than the show face so you do not leave a fingerprint in the finish.
11 Trim and shape the edges flush
Put on eye protection, a mask, and long sleeves to guard against splinters and airborne dust. Fit a cutting disc in the rotary tool and trim close to the part's outline, then switch to a sanding drum to bring the edge flush all the way around. Pay particular attention to corners and to any latching edge that must clear when the part opens and closes.
12 Wet sand, clear coat, and reinstall
Wet sand the surface with 600 grit under running water, working evenly and thoroughly. A white haze will build up; this is normal, it disappears when wet and again once cleared. Wash and dry the part, then apply a single coat of UV-protective polyurethane clear, which keeps the resin from yellowing in sunlight; an automotive clear coat works equally well. After the can's stated dry time, reinstall the part and confirm it seats and moves cleanly, touching up any binding edge with the rotary tool if needed.

- 💡 One yard of 5.7oz cloth is enough to coat many small interior and engine-bay pieces, so treat early attempts as practice.
- 💡 To set an emblem into the finish, remove it first, coat the part, then put it back once the last flow coat is down so that it cures into the resin; drill its mounting holes starting with a small bit and stepping up, then open them to the plastic edge with a grinding bit.
- 💡 There is no real penalty for a thick resin layer; excess just runs off and takes longer to cure, whereas too little leaves a dull, matted, fiberglass-like look.
