Acura CL (1G) Climate Control LED Illumination Conversion
Introduction
This guide converts the climate control panel illumination in the first-generation Acura CL from its factory incandescent bulbs to LEDs, so the button lighting can be matched to an LED gauge cluster or a chosen interior color. Two levels are covered: a straightforward direct bulb swap using drop-in LED replacements, and an optional advanced stage that adds extra wired LEDs to drive light fully down the panel's internal channels so the MODE and Manual labels glow evenly. The drop-in bulbs carry their own resistors, so no resistor soldering is required for the basic swap; the second stage does involve soldering and patient wire routing inside a very tight housing. Either way, the wood trim and the climate control unit must first be removed to reach the circuit board, and the LED bulbs are polarized, so orientation must be tested before final assembly. Safety Warnings
- ⚠ Do not allow super glue to touch the MODE, FAN, or AC buttons that sit between the two light channels; gluing them will jam them.
- ⚠ The wood-grain trim is brittle and its clips snap easily. Always release clips from behind and never force the trim out.
- ⚠ Do not overtighten the circuit board screws. Forcing the board down against a wire bulge can crack it.
- ⚠ LED bulbs are polarized and light in only one orientation, so always test each one before final assembly.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Remove the wood trim and climate control unit from the dash
The climate control panel is fastened to the long wood-grain trim strip and must come out together with it, so work slowly to avoid cracking the wood. Beyond the fasteners shown in the separate trim-removal writeup, two extra screws sit underneath the control unit and are only reachable once the center console is out; removing the glove box exposes another screw plus the clips that anchor the wood trim to the dash. Lie on your back in the passenger footwell, look upward, and push the metal retaining clips loose from behind with a flathead, easing the trim outward a little at a time rather than pulling on it. When the assembly is free, lower it and unplug the two connectors to release it fully.
2 Separate the control unit from the trim and open its housing
Two screws secure the control unit to the wood strip; back them out, then gently raise the retaining clips with a small flathead and work the unit free a bit at a time. To split the control's own housing, remove the two screws at the rear, pry the two upper clips to release the top, then release the two lower clips to open it up.
3 Swap in the LED bulbs and verify polarity
Each factory bulb releases with roughly a quarter turn; rotate it about 45 degrees, pull it out, and seat an LED replacement in its place. Use 4 mm NEO-series bulbs (part number NEO4-X, where the final letter indicates color, for example NEO4-G for green); five positions need filling, but a sixth bulb is worth having as a spare. These have integral resistors and drop straight in. Because LEDs are polarized, reconnect the unit, turn the headlight switch to its first position, and confirm every bulb lights. If one stays dark, remove it and reseat it rotated the opposite way.
4 Add reflective strips to push light down the mode channels (optional)
LED output is more focused than the old filament light and does not reach far down the two internal channels that feed the MODE and Manual markings. To improve this, remove the six screws holding the circuit board and lift the board out; the wiring harness can remain attached, though unplugging it frees up room at the cost of a fiddly reconnection later. Cut two narrow strips of reflective foil to match the channel width, then glue them along the inside top face of each channel to bounce light toward the ends. Hold each strip with a long thin tool while the adhesive cures. Foil reflects better than improvised materials such as a drink-pouch liner.
5 Prepare and position supplemental pre-wired LEDs (optional advanced stage)
For fuller illumination, add two pre-wired LEDs, one feeding each channel. Remove the six Phillips screws that hold the board to the faceplate and release the clip on each side to separate them. Do not route the LED wires through the open holes near the defroster and recirculation buttons; those openings are the paths those buttons travel through, and wires there will block reassembly. Instead, pass the leads through the existing openings used by the unit's wiring harness, running one lead up and the other down.
6 Wire, test polarity, and solder the added LEDs
Strip the supply leads and the LED leads and twist them together as a temporary joint. With the board and the harness side of the housing reconnected, power the unit, confirm the main bulbs still light, then check the added LEDs: touch the leads to the bulb's rear contacts to find which orientation lights it and note it, since that dictates how you solder. Carefully lift the pins on the back of each LED, hook the wires around them, fold the pins back down, and solder. Re-test afterward to confirm the joint carries power.
7 Route the wires, confirm button travel, and reassemble
Feed the soldered wires down through the top and bottom channels and tuck them clear of every button; expect several attempts. Before closing the unit, press each button to confirm it still makes contact (the AC button is the most likely to give trouble). The board may sit slightly proud if it rests on a wire, which is acceptable as long as the buttons still actuate. Trim the plastic board cover just enough for the wires to exit cleanly, then seat and screw the board down without overtightening, since clamping it against a bulge can crack it. Reconnect and test all climate functions, close the housing, refit its two rear screws, and reinstall the assembly onto the wood trim and back into the dash in reverse order, testing once more before buttoning everything up.

- 💡 A hot spot can remain where an added LED faces outward toward the center; adding more reflective material or repositioning the LED reduces it.
- 💡 This swap only recolors the button illumination. The central display that shows fan speed and seat icons sits behind a green plastic filter and is not affected; changing it is a separate, more involved job because that filter is glued in.
