Step-by-Step Instructions

1 Raise and support the vehicle

Lift the car and set jack stands under the factory jack points. Leave the floor jack in place under a solid part of the chassis as a backup. Confirm the vehicle is stable on the stands before going underneath; never work under a car held only by a jack. If you have just been driving, allow the exhaust to cool before touching it.

2 Remove the shift knob

From inside the cabin, unthread the shift knob and set it aside safely. If you plan to fit an aftermarket knob, this is the one you will replace on reassembly; it is not required for the short-throw upgrade itself.

3 Clear access below the shifter (exhaust optional)

The shift linkage sits directly above the exhaust B-pipe. For the most room, drop the B-pipe: remove the three bolts at the triangular flange where it meets the catalytic converter, then the two bolts joining it to the axle-back section, and take the pipe out. Removing the pipe is not strictly required, but it makes maneuvering far easier. As several builders in the thread confirmed, you can instead leave the exhaust untouched and simply unbolt the stabilizer bar to slide the whole assembly out; expect tight finger clearance around the pipe when you bolt everything back up.

4 Disconnect the linkage and unbolt the assembly

Look up into the space above the pipe to find the shifter, stabilizer bar, and linkage. Remove the single bolt that passes through the linkage and the base of the shifter. While the assembly is still held firm, partially loosen the two small bolts that clamp the shifter to the stabilizer bar, since they are easier to break loose now. Then remove the two bolts securing the stabilizer bushing to the underbody, taking care to save the rubber rings that isolate the bushing from the floor pan.

5 Lower the assembly and remove the old shifter

Pivot the linkage bar (the one without the shifter attached) out of the way. Draw the stabilizer bar and shifter downward, peeling back the dust boot so the shifter clears it. Now fully back out the two small clamp bolts: their back face is oval or headless, so grip it with pliers, or hold a 12mm wrench on it with channel-locks, while you turn the fastener from the other side. With the bolts out, separate the shifter from the stabilizer bar.

6 Strip the reusable parts off the original shifter

Work the metal retaining plate free by drawing it past the raised edge of the rubber boot and off the T-shaped top of the shifter. Peel the rubber boot back off the pivot ball and pull the plastic piece out from underneath it. Finally, stretch the rubber boot itself off over one side of the T-end. A dab of grease makes the boot easier to work over the shifter.

7 Grease and rebuild onto the new shifter

Dip a finger in the high-temperature grease and coat the pivot ball of the new shifter evenly. Transfer the plastic ring off the original lever onto the new pivot ball, then grease the ring as well. Stretch the rubber boot over the T-end big-end first, working it down until it just covers the ring around the ball. Wipe off any excess grease, then refit the metal retaining plate with its flared side facing the T-end.

8 Clamp the shifter back into the stabilizer bar

Seat the new shifter into the stabilizer bar in the same orientation as the original. Refit the two small clamp bolts, holding the back of each with pliers as you tighten. This is a good moment to swap the factory headless carriage bolts for proper bolts so any future service is easier; if your kit came without a spacer, a cheap nylock nut and a couple of nylon washers also work well to take up play.

9 Reinstall the assembly in the car

Feed the shifter and stabilizer bar back up through the dust boot. Orient the bend in the shifter toward the rear of the car for a shorter reach, or point it forward if you would rather stretch a little further for each gear change. Refit the two stabilizer bushing bolts along with their rubber rings and tighten them.

10 Fit the spacer and reconnect the linkage

If your shifter has a small T-end and ships with a spacer, remove the small metal sleeve from the passenger side of the T-end and drop the larger spacer in its place. Bring the linkage bar back over the T-end and run its bolt through, making sure it passes through the spacer, then tighten. If your kit had no spacer, use the nylock nut and nylon washers here instead to remove slop at the joint.

11 Final check and reassembly

Go over every fastener on the shift assembly and confirm each is tight. Reinstall the exhaust B-pipe if you removed it. Lower the car off the stands, thread the shift knob back on, and run the lever through all gears to confirm smooth, positive engagement with the new shorter throw.
