J-series V6 engine (J-swap)
into Prelude BB6 (from CL Type-S)
Yes: the J-series V6 engine (J-swap) from the CL Type-S (2001-2003) fits the Prelude BB6 (1997-2001) — difficult difficulty, modifications required.
Installation notes
Required modifications
Swap mounts: Innovative Mounts 80152 three-point conversion kit (driver, passenger and rear mounts plus three sub-brackets) for manual-transmission 97-01 Prelude; an optional front mount (80140) is available. Transmission: Innovative lists the 04-08 TL (base), 03-06 Accord 6-speed and 2003 CL Type-S manual gearboxes as compatible. Hood: Innovative notes some Prelude J-swaps need hood spacers/risers to close the hood. Also needed: J-series axles, harness/ECU integration, cooling, exhaust and A/C adaptation.
Important caveats
- The Innovative kit is manual-transmission only; there is no automatic version.
- Innovative notes some Prelude J-swaps need hood spacers or risers to close the hood.
- Hybrid Racing describes the swap as one of the least documented Honda swaps, so expect to solve wiring, axles and cooling without a turnkey guide.
- Polyurethane swap mounts remove the factory fluid damping, so expect more vibration than stock.
