Step-by-Step Instructions

1 Soak the sandpaper

2 Mask off the surrounding paint

Work the entire lens until the yellowed, oxidized layer is cut away; the plastic will turn uniformly dull and frosted, which is the correct result at this stage.

5 Refine with 1500 grit

Switch to 1500 grit and sand the whole lens again, this time running your strokes perpendicular to the 800-grit pass. If the first stage was vertical, go horizontal now. The crossing pattern lets you see when the coarser scratches have been fully erased, leaving a finer, more even frost.

6 Final-sand with 2000 grit

Repeat once more with 2000 grit, again reversing direction relative to the previous pass. For an even clearer result, follow with 3000 grit and one more change of direction. By the end the surface should look smooth and evenly matte, with no visible deeper scratch lines remaining.

7 Polish the lens clear

Wipe and dry the lens, then apply Meguiar's Plastic-X and work it into the surface until the frost gives way to transparency. A dual-action buffer or a drill-mounted pad is faster; five minutes per light produces a strong result and longer working brings it clearer still. Polishing by hand works too, it simply takes longer. If using a machine, keep pressure light and never dwell in one spot, because built-up heat can warp the plastic. 8 Seal with wax
