Honda Accord (CG, 1998-2002) Manual Transmission Fluid Change
- Use jack stands; never rely on the jack alone.
- Do not drain the transmission until the fill plug is out.
Introduction
The sixth-generation Accord's manual gearbox uses Honda MTF, and changing it is a short job once the right front wheel is off for access. The drain plug has a square hole that takes a 3/8-inch drive ratchet directly, and the fill plug is a 17mm bolt that can be stubborn. Remove the fill plug first, drain, and refill until the fluid reaches the bottom of the fill hole. Hybrid Racing lists Honda Genuine MTF (08798-9031) for the 6th and 7th generation Accord manual (https://www.hybrid-racing.com/collections/all/products/honda-genuine-manual-transmission-fluid). Adapted from a community writeup by Bearcat on 6thGenAccord.com (https://www.6thgenaccord.com/forums/goto/post?id=782270).
Procedure
7 steps-
Step 1: Raise the car and remove the right front wheel
Chock the rear wheels and measure the car's normal ride height at the front so you can return to it when filling. Loosen the right front lug nuts, jack the front, support it on a jack stand and remove the right front wheel for access to the transmission plugs.
-
Step 2: Remove the fill plug first
Find the 17mm fill plug on the transmission and remove it before draining. If it will not turn, one thread member put an open-end 17mm wrench squarely on it and gave the wrench a few sharp hammer taps to break it loose.
-
Step 3: Drain the transmission
Place the drain pan under the drain plug, insert the 3/8-inch drive ratchet into the square hole in the plug and remove it. Let the old fluid drain completely.
-
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer
Fit a new 94109-14000 washer to the drain plug and reinstall it. Tighten it to the service manual torque.
-
Step 5: Fill with Honda MTF
Before filling, set the car back to its normal level height (Bearcat's writeup raises or lowers it to the height measured at the start) so the fill hole shows a true level. Using a fill tube on the bottle, or a pump, add Honda MTF through the fill hole until fluid starts to flow back out. Expect it to take about 2 quarts.
-
Step 6: Reinstall the fill plug
Fit a new 94109-20000 washer to the fill plug and reinstall it, tightening it to the service manual torque.
-
Step 7: Refit the wheel and test
Reinstall the wheel, lower the car, torque the lug nuts and take a short drive. Check both plugs for leaks afterwards.
- Washers are inexpensive at a Honda parts counter; buy them before you start.
- Buy a third quart of MTF so you are not caught short.
