Installation notes

Yes — the Brembo front brakes from a 2004–2006 Acura TL 6-speed manual or a 2007–2008 TL Type-S (UA6) fit a 2004–2008 Acura TL automatic, as long as you swap the front knuckles for the 6MT/Type-S knuckles. AcuraZine's parts list thread gives the OEM part numbers. A separate owner's 5AT-to-Brembo build says any non-Brembo TL can take any year of Brembo knuckle. That owner describes the base and Type-S knuckles as almost identical, except that the Type-S caliper mounting flanges are recessed to make room for the Brembo.

Required modifications

Swap the front knuckles for the Brembo-type knuckles: 51210-SEP-A01 (right front) and 51215-SEP-A01 (left front). Then fit the Brembo calipers 45018-SEP-A60 (right) and 45019-SEP-A51 (left), pads 45022-SEP-A60, front rotors 45251-SEP-A51 (listed in the parts catalogue as the '17 in.' rotor, i.e. for 17-inch-wheel cars), splash guards 45255-SEP-A50 and 45256-SEP-A50, caliper clips 90651-SEP-A50 and 90656-SEP-A50, caliper bolts 90107-SEP-A50, brake hoses 01464-SEP-A50 and 01465-SEP-A50, and brake pipes 46335-SEP-A50 and 46336-SEP-A50. Wheel speed sensors (57450-SEP-A01 and 57455-SEP-A01) and hub bearings (44300-SDA-A52) are only needed if the old ones can't be reused. Fit each caliper with the bleeder facing up and the larger pistons at the bottom, then bleed the brakes.

Caution

Important caveats

  • The base automatic knuckles can't be reused. The Brembo needs the 6MT/Type-S knuckle with the recessed caliper flanges.
  • The ABS wheel speed sensors are often rusted into the old knuckle. One poster puts it at about a 50% chance you'll need new sensors, and recommends dielectric grease when fitting them.
  • Moving the bearing and hub to the new knuckle needs a press and 90-degree snap ring pliers, unless the bearing and hub come out as an assembly.
  • The Brembo calipers can go on the wrong side. Bleeders must face up and the larger pistons must sit at the bottom. One owner first installed them backwards.
  • Check wheel clearance. One poster says the Brembo rotors are about 1 inch larger in diameter than stock and that wheels 'have to be right'; another thinks they are the same size. Test-fit your wheels.
