Installation notes

Yes — the F22C1 from a 2004-2005 Honda S2000 (AP2) fits a 2000-2003 Honda S2000 (AP1) as a near drop-in replacement, with the main decision being ECU choice. S2Ki describes the 2004-2005 long block as the most plug-and-play option and says a stock F22C is pretty much plug and play in an AP1. Owners often keep the AP1 gearbox for its taller gearing and the lighter AP1 flywheel (about 14 lb versus 22 lb). Later 2006-2009 F22C1 engines can be used but need the AP1 intake, valve cover and sensors transferred.

Required modifications

No mount, axle or chassis changes. ECU: either keep the AP1 ECU (owners report it runs, but fuel economy suffers and the higher AP1 rev limit must be respected) or use an AP2 ECU; a Hondata/aftermarket tune is commonly recommended. Fuel: a small bracket that stops the fuel feed line rotating on the rail may need modifying, or swap the AP1 fuel rail over. Many owners keep the AP1 gearbox, lighter AP1 flywheel and AP1 clutch slave cylinder. 2006-2009 F22C1 engines need more parts moved over: the AP1 intake manifold and throttle body, valve cover, cam and crank trigger wheels and sensors.

Caution

Important caveats

  • Wikipedia gives the F22C1 a lower factory redline (8,200 rpm) than the F20C; with an AP1 ECU the higher AP1 rev limit stays, so owners warn to watch the redline.
  • For 2006-2009 F22C1 engines, owners report needing to move over the AP1 intake manifold and throttle body, valve cover, cam/crank trigger wheels and sensors.
  • Hondata's S2000 KPro (an RSX-based ECU for 2000-2005 S2000s) does not support the S2000 immobilizer, which is disabled in KManager, and requires fitting different crank/TDC sensors and trigger wheels and a new valve cover.
  • Some owners use the AP1 ECU, others the AP2 ECU; there is no single factory-approved combination.
